Utah State Men’s Tennis Sweeps Weekly Mountain West Awards

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis players Bodin Zarkovic and Mohammad Alkotop were named the Mountain West Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the Conference on Monday.

In its only match last week, Utah State clinched the Mountain West regular season title with a 4-0 win at San Diego State on Saturday to conclude the regular season. Overall, it is USU's fourth MW regular season tennis championship dating back to 2016.

Zarkovic, a graduate senior from Belgrade, Serbia, is on a six-match winning streak in singles play and an 11-match winning streak for doubles. Against the Aztecs last weekend, Zarkovic posted a 6-4 win with his partner Sergi Micó Fenollar in the doubles portion of the match. He then earned the first singles point for the Aggies with a straight sets victory at the No. 1 spot (6-3, 6-3).

Alkotop, a true freshman from Amman, Jordan, has won six straight singles matches. Against SDSU, he won his singles match in straight sets at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-3), while his doubles match was left unfinished. With Alkotop's win, the Aggies clinched the match and solidified a share of the MW regular season title.

Utah State (18-4, 5-1 MW) is the top seed in this week's MW Championships, which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. USU will begin the tournament against either fourth-seeded San Diego State (14-6, 3-3 MW) or fifth-seeded Nevada (6-13, 2-4 MW) in the semifinals on Thursday, April 25, at 6 p.m. (MT). If USU advances to the championship match, it will be on Friday, April 26, at 6 p.m. Fans can watch every match via the MW Network.
