LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (22-26, 5-11 MW) fell to San José State in five innings during the first game of the final three-game series of the year on Thursday afternoon at Johnson Field.
The game began with a Spartan home run with their first batter in the top of the first inning to put San José State on the board early. In the bottom of the inning, junior infielder Ariel Fifita singled to left field to get on base but was left there as the next three batters each struck out.
San José State tagged on to its lead with an RBI triple in the second inning before the Aggies went three up, three down on offense.
In the third inning, the Spartans put one more on the board to extend their lead to 3-0. Utah State's junior infielder Claudia Medina doubled to center field in the bottom of the inning before sophomore outfielder Kya Pratt hit a single to left field, followed by an RBI single from Fifita which sent Medina home for team's first score of the game.
The Aggies gave up three runs in the top of the fourth before sophomore infielder Alex Bunton hit a single to right field in the bottom of the inning to add a hit onto her stat line.
San José State rallied four runs in the top of the fifth. Utah State fought to keep the game alive as Fifita hit a home run to keep her perfect day at the plate alive and tag one more score on the board, but the Aggies were unable to narrow the deficit within eight runs to keep the game going.
