Utah State Men’s Basketball Announces the Signing of Dexter Akanno

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head men's basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun announced the signing of Dexter Akanno (Uh-kah-no) on Wednesday. Akanno has one year of eligibility and will be a senior for the Aggies for the 2024-25 season.
 
Akanno, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound guard joins Utah State after spending the past three seasons at Oregon State as he appeared in 91 games with 68 starts.
 
"Dexter is coming off an incredible season and he will bring great experience to us with his time in the Big East and the Pac-12," said Calhoun. "Dexter has the ability to play multiple positions and we are excited to add him to the Aggie family."
 
During the 2023-24 campaign, Akanno started 25 of the 30 games he played in and averaged 10.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 28.6 minutes, while shooting 39.0 percent (104-of-267), including 32.5 percent (38-of-117) from 3-point range, and 70.4 percent (81-of-115) at the free throw line. Overall, he scored in double-figures in 21 games including a career-high 22 points against UCLA.
 
Akanno averaged 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 26.2 minutes during the 2022-23 campaign. As a sophomore, he scored in double-figures 10 times including a season-high 20 points against Oregon. That season, he shot 35.5 percent (81-of-228) from the field, including 25.4 percent (31-of-122) from 3-point range, and 74.7 percent (59-of-79) at the free throw line.
 
In his first year at Oregon State, Akanno played in 29 games with 17 starts and averaged 4.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per outing. He scored in double-figures five times during the year, including scoring a season-high 12 points against Washington State.
 
Prior to Oregon State, Akanno spent two years at Marquette as he redshirted during the 2019-20 season and appeared in 12 games during the 2020-21 campaign.
 
Akanno prepped at Blair Academy in New Jersey during the 2018-19 season and was an honorable mention Mid-Atlantic Prep League selection as he helped lead Blair Academy to the league championship.
 
Akanno graduated from Valencia (CA) High School in 2018 and was selected to the all-Santa Clara Valley first team following his senior season as he averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. As a junior, he was named the Foothill League Co-Player of the Year as he averaged a team-best 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Overall, he led the Vikings to the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs in 2018 and to a share of the league title in 2017.
