LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer was picked to finish second in the Mountain West preseason coaches poll, while three Aggies were selected to the conference watch list. USU finished second last season with a 9-2 record in league play, before going on to win its first ever Mountain West Tournament title and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Members of the MW Soccer Watch List, which replaces the preseason all-conference team used in previous years, include senior defender
Addy Weichers, junior midfielder
Kaylie Chambers and sophomore midfielder
Summer Diamond.
Weichers started all 23 games for the Aggies last season, helping anchor the league's top defense. As a unit, USU allowed just six combined goals to 13 Mountain West opponents with eight shutouts. Weichers ranked second on the team with 2,062 minutes on the pitch and played 90+ minutes 19 times. She was named to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team after helping the team post two clean sheets in the tournament.
Chambers earned first team all-Mountain West accolades last season after leading the team in points (13), goals (4) and assists (5). Her 13 points ranked 11th in the MW, while she led the conference in game-winning goals with four. Chambers started 19 matches in 2023, totaling 1,130 minutes on the year. She also earned all-conference recognition in 2022 as she was named to both the second team and the all-newcomer team.
Diamond is coming off of a strong debut campaign last season in which she was named to the Mountain West All-Newcomer Team. As a true freshman, Diamond ranked third on the team with nine points. Her four goals were tied for most on the team, while she tallied the second-most shots of any Aggie with 32. Diamond scored the game-winning goal in Utah State's 1-0 win over No. 1 BYU, and had a two-goal performance in her debut against Weber State.
San Diego State, the 2023 regular-season champion and Mountain West Tournament runner-up, was selected first by the coaches with eight first-place votes and 117 points. The Aggies picked up two first place votes to total 107 points in the poll. Colorado State (99) was the final team to earn first-place votes with two. The Rams were followed by Boise State (99), New Mexico (76) and Nevada (56), while Fresno State and UNLV were tied for seventh with 55 points apiece. Air Force was picked ninth with 37 points, while San José State, Wyoming and Colorado College rounded out the poll with 34, 32 and 25 points, respectively.
Utah State boasts one of the league's most experienced squads, with 15 letterwinners and eight starters returning from last year's team, including two all-Mountain West honorees. The Aggies also welcome 11 newcomers to the roster, including eight freshmen and three transfers.
