SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Utah State dropped their final match of the Utah Classic on Sunday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, falling to UTEP, 3-0.
Set One
The match began as a back-and-forth affair before a pair of 3-0 runs deliver the momentum to the Miners with a 15-9 advantage. The Aggies fought back with a 6-1 burst to trim the deficit to a single point, but were unable to complete the comeback as UTEP took set one, 25-19.
Set Two
The Miners again made the first strike in the second frame, opening up an immediate 6-0 lead. Battling against a deficit for the entirety of the set, the Aggies came as close as 21-15 before a late UTEP run clinched the 2-0 advantage heading into the third set.
Set Three
With their backs against the wall, the Aggies came out with their strongest opening stretch of the match, using an early 4-0 run to take a 9-6 lead. UTEP immediately punched back with a 7-1 run before the Aggies retook the lead with a 4-0 burst. Another quick 3-0 run from the Miners, however, gave an advantage back to UTEP from which USU was unable to again recover as the Miners clinched the match with a 25-22 win in the set.
QUICK NOTES
- Senior Adna Mehmedovic led the Aggies with 12 kills on a .240 hitting percentage (12-6-25).
- Sophomore Olivia Tukuafu and freshman Kate Lijić tied for the team lead with 10 assists apiece, while freshman Kaylie Kofe followed close behind with seven.
- Freshman Jagoda Bialek led the team with eight digs.
- Freshman Loryn Helgesen led the team with a pair of blocks, including one solo.
- USU hit .105 for the match (31-23-76) while UTEP registered a .333 attack percentage (34-10-72).
UP NEXT
Utah State returns to the Wayne Estes Center for the team's 2024 home opener against Cal on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. (MT). The Aggies will then play host to No. 8-ranked Purdue on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. (MT).
