LOS ANGELES – In their first of three matches this weekend in California, Utah State volleyball fell to No. 23 USC, 3-0, on Thursday night at the Galen Center.
Set One
The Trojans immediately took control of the opening set with a 13-1 run at the start of the match. USU fought back with a 6-1 burst to cut into the lead but the deficit proved too large to overcome as USC took the first set, 25-12.
Set Two
The Aggies battled tough in the second frame as the two sides traded rallies in the early stages. After USU battled to a one-point deficit at 11-10, a 3-0 Trojan run gave the home side the momentum. The Aggies again battled back on multiple occasions to single-point deficits but were unable to complete the comeback as USC went up 2-0 with a 25-20 win in the second set.
Set Three
The third set threatened to quickly end the match as USC jumped out to a 6-0 lead to begin the frame. After the Trojans led by as many as nine points, however, the Aggies fought back as close as four points at 21-17 before USC closed the door to claim the set and match, 25-19.
Quick Notes
- Junior Tierney Barlow led the Aggies with six total blocks, becoming the first Aggie other than graduate senior Kelsey Watson to lead the team in blocks this season.
- Freshman Jagoda Bialek posted a team-high 13 digs, continuing her streak of six straight matches recording or tying for the team lead in digs. It is Bialek's third game recording double-digit digs.
- Senior Adna Mehmedovic led USU with seven kills while freshmen Kate Lijic and Kaylie Kofe each posted seven assists to lead the team.
- Barlow, Bialek, Kofe and freshman Andrea Simovski each recorded one service ace.
