LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women's basketball fought hard through three quarters before falling behind late to San Diego State in an 85-66 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
After the visitors jumped out to an 8-2 lead to begin the game, the Aggies answered back with an 11-0 run to take a five-point lead late in the opening quarter. Senior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs and junior guard
Jamisyn Heaton each hit 3-pointers as part of the Aggie run. SDSU returned serve, however, with a 16-2 stretch to take a 27-18 lead midway through the second quarter.
Utah State fought back over the final six minutes before halftime, with freshman guard
Ava Smith breaking the Aztec run with a 3-pointer from the left wing. USU remained close through the remainder of the half as Stubbs scored a layup to beat the buzzer to bring USU with 38-35 entering halftime. The Aggies held a 22-20 rebounding advantage in the first half and outscored the Aztecs in second-chance points (8-3), bench points (10-0) and points in the paint (14-10) during the first 20 minutes.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Utah State maintained pace with the Aztecs for much of the third quarter. Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers while junior center
Sophie Sene hit a pair of layups to help USU remain within four points at 54-50. From there, a 15-5 SDSU run which stretched into the fourth quarter restored SDSU's control of the contest and ultimately proved too large a deficit to overcome in the final frame.
Stubbs led the Aggies with 17 points on the night, also adding four assists and a steal. Freshman guard
Denae Skelton added 10 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, and Sene tied her career-highs of 10 points and seven rebounds. Heaton added nine points while leading the team with eight rebounds. Smith also finished with a career-high nine points, going 3-of-6 from 3-point range in the game, to help USU's bench outscore SDSU's reserves, 31-13.
Utah State shot 25-of-68 (36.8 percent) from the field and went 9-of-39 (23.1 percent) from behind the 3-point line. The Aggies also totaled 17 assists, their highest single-game assist total since recording 20 against Fresno State in March of 2022.
