LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women's basketball fought back from another sizable deficit but ultimately ran out of time to complete the comeback in an 82-77 loss to Boise State on Wednesday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Broncos opened the game quickly with a 12-2 run en route to a 24-15 advantage after the first quarter. Utah State responded multiple times, as senior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs scored the first four points of the second quarter to kickstart a 9-3 Aggie run to cut the deficit to 27-24. Boise State would re-extend its lead to 10 points twice during the quarter, both times being immediately followed by 5-0 Aggie bursts to trim the lead back to five points, the second of which was capped off by freshman guard
Carlie Latta beating the buzzer from 3-point range to cut the Broncos' lead to 39-34 entering halftime.
USU further cut BSU's lead down three points early in the second half following four points from freshman guard
Carlie Latta. The Broncos then answered back with an 8-0 run to restore a double-digit lead. The Aggies again fought back with a 7-2 burst before BSU wrestled back control with a 9-0 run, building a 16-point lead late in the third quarter.
Utah State refused to go quietly, however, slowly eating into the deficit throughout the final period. The Aggies shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, including a 4-of-7 mark from 3-point territory to spearhead the comeback effort. USU cut the lead to only five points following a 3-pointer from Latta and a steal-and-score from junior guard
Mia Tarver in the final minute, but were unable to complete the comeback prior to the final buzzer.
Stubbs led the Aggies with 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field while also going 6-of-9 from the free throw line. Stubbs now sits only four points away from 1,000 points in her career. Latta finished with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a 4-of-5 showing from 3-point range, while Tarver made it three Aggies in double figures with 14 points while shooting 4-of-11 overall and 6-of-8 on FTs. Freshman guard
Denae Skelton and junior center
Sophie Sene each scored eight points off the bench.
Stubbs and Tarver also tied for the team lead in assists alongside freshman guard
Elise Livingston with three apiece. Sophomore forward
Gracie Johnson led USU with three blocks on the night.
The Aggies shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field and shot 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from 3-point territory. Utah State recorded 12 assists with only seven turnovers, finishing with fewer than 10 turnovers in back-to-back games for the first time in program history. USU also forced Boise State into 14 turnovers and outscored the Broncos, 18-11, in points off turnovers.
