Game Recap: Football |
HONOLULU, Hawaii — Utah State football retook the lead early in the third quarter before 20 unanswered points from Hawaii ultimately doomed the Aggies in a 44-26 loss on Saturday night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

Utah State garnered 435 yards of total offense, rushing for 166 yards and averaging 5.7 yards per rush. Senior running back Miles Davis led the Aggies with 102 yards rushing on 15 carries, his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, and added one touchdown, also adding 12 yards on three receptions. Senior wide receiver Brady Boyd led the Aggies with five catches for 68 yards. Graduate tight end Broc Lane finished with four receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown while junior wide receiver Braden Pegan posted a team-high 84 yards on three catches. Junior running back Javen Jacobs recorded two catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Kahanu Davis and freshman running back Noah White each added one catch for 20 and three yards, respectively.

Graduate quarterback Bryson Barnes led the passing attack, finishing with 175 yards on 14-of-26 passing with one touchdown and one interception, also adding 64 yards on 12 rushing attempts. Graduate quarterback Jacob Conover added 64 yards on 4-of-10 passing and sophomore quarterback Anthony Garcia threw one pass on the night for 30 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman linebacker Chris Joe led the Aggie defense with a pair of sacks as USU racked up a season-high 5.0 sacks as a team. Junior defensive tackle Tyree Morris also added a sack while senior linebacker John Miller, senior defensive tackle Gabriel Iniguez Jr., redshirt freshman defensive tackle Carson Tujague and sophomore linebacker Mataira Brown each added 0.5 sacks. Sophomore cornerback D'Angelo Mayes recorded his second interception of the season for USU's lone takeaway of the game. Junior safety Brevin Hamblin led the Aggies with eight total tackles while senior safety Ike Larsen made his season debut and finished with seven tackles.

After trading punts to begin the game, both sides then traded field goals with junior kicker Tanner Rinker connecting from 20 yards out to tie the game. Hawaii's Micah Alejado then threw an 18-yard touchdown to Pofele Ashlock. The Aggies responded with a seven-play, 47-yard drive capped off with a one-yard TD plunge by M. Davis. After stopping a fake punt from the Rainbow Warriors, USU then took the lead on the first play of their ensuing drive as Jacobs hauled in a 30-yard TD catch from Garcia on a trick play. Alejado pushed the Rainbow Warriors back in front with seven- and 31-yard TD throws to Ashlock sandwiched around a 40-yard field goal from Rinker that sent the Aggies into halftime down 24-20.

A failed onside kick from Hawaii gave USU excellent starting field position to begin the second half. The Aggies took advantage three plays later with Barnes finding Lane for a 32-yard touchdown to push the Aggies back in front. A blocked PAT, however, helped turn the momentum in favor of the Rainbow Warriors, who responded with 20 unanswered points on a pair of rushing touchdowns and field goals. Utah State twice drove into Hawaii territory in the fourth quarter to attempt a comeback but were thwarted on both drives as the Rainbow Warriors sealed the 44-26 win.
