LOGAN, Utah – A strong second half helped Utah State men's basketball (3-0, 0-0 MW) remain unbeaten Wednesday night at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, as the Aggies took down in-state foe Weber State 83-73 to improve to 3-0.
The USU bench accounted for 38 of the team's 83 points, led by a 15-point night for senior guard Kolby King, along with a 13-point night for senior forward Garry Clark.
Clark was limited to just 17 minutes of action with foul trouble, but tacked on five boards and a block while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor. Along with his 15-point performance, King came just one rebound shy of his career high as he pulled down eight boards, to go along with two assists and two steals.
The sides opened the game with 20 even minutes, as the game went into halftime knotted up at 41-41. But, after shooting just 41 percent from the floor in the first half, USU's efficiency jumped to 49 percent in the second half. On the flip side, the Aggies limited the Wildcats to 33 percent shooting in the second half after they connected at a 43 percent clip in the first half.
The first Aggie points of the night came from graduate guard Drake Allen, a pair of free throws which brought him to 1,000 career Division I points. Allen, at the fourth school in his six-year collegiate career, has scored 231 of those points in an Aggie uniform this season and last.
Junior forward Karson Templin had a strong performance, starting and playing 25 minutes for USU, as he went for a season-best 16 points, just two shy of his career best. He also tacked on five rebounds and a steal.
Utah State took advantage down low throughout the game, out-scoring the Wildcats 46-28 in the paint.
Joining Templin, King and Clark in double-figures was junior guard Mason Falslev, who went for 10 points, four boards, an assist and two steals.
In total, Utah State shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the floor, 13.0 percent (3-of-23) from 3-point range and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) at the charity stripe. Weber State shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from behind the arc and 75.0 percent (21-of-28) at the free throw line.
