LOGAN, Utah – Utah State offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven has been nominated for the 2025 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches, it was announced Tuesday.

The 63 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. This is the largest group of nominees in the history of the Broyles Award. McGiven is one of five assistants from Mountain West schools nominated for the 2025 Broyles Award.

McGiven, who is in his first year as offensive coordinator under head coach Bronco Mendenhall, has spent four years total on staff at Utah State. During the 2025 season, McGiven has helped Utah State to a 6-5 record, including a 4-3 mark in the Mountain West, and bowl eligibility for the 12th time in the past 15 years and for the 18th time in program history.

With McGiven as offensive coordinator, Utah State ranks second in the Mountain West and 38th in the nation in scoring at 32.5 points per game, second in the MW and 26th in the nation in yards per play (6.36), second in the MW and 33rd in the nation in total offense (424.0 ypg), third in the MW and 29th in the nation in fourth down conversions (.636), third in the MW and 30th in the nation in red zone offense as it has scored on 36 of its 40 trips (27 TDs, 9 FGs), fourth in the MW and 35th in the nation in touchdowns scored in the red zone (27 of 40, 67.5 percent), and fourth in the MW and 37th in the nation in passing (257.5 ypg).

Furthermore, Utah State's offense ranks first in the Mountain West and fifth in the nation with four interceptions thrown (0.36 pg), first in the MW and ninth in the nation in turnovers lost with nine (0.70 pg), second in the MW and 42nd in the nation with five fumbles lost (0.40 pg), and fourth in the MW and 37th in the nation in turnover margin (+0.36).

Individually, McGiven has helped USU graduate quarterback Bryson Barnes to one of the best seasons in the Mountain West as Barnes is first or second in the conference in five different statistical categories, including ranking second in total touchdowns with 27 and second in points responsible for per game (15.1). On the season, Barnes is 189-of-304 (.622) passing for 2,502 yards (227.5 pg) with 18 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has rushed for 644 yards on 158 carries and eight touchdowns, which is tied for the school record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a season.

Barnes, who has posted three 100-yard rushing games this year, is one of five FBS quarterbacks this season to have three games with at least 100 yards rushing and 100 yards passing in the same game.

Another player that has excelled in McGiven's offense is junior wide receiver Braden Pegan, who has caught 58 passes for 899 yards and five touchdowns. Pegan ranks second in the Mountain West and 14th in the nation in receiving (81.6 ypg), third in the MW and 36th in the nation in receptions (5.27 pg), sixth in the MW and 73rd in the nation in receiving touchdowns with five (0.45 pg), and seventh in the MW and 78th in the nation in yards per reception (15.5).
