BOISE, Idaho – Utah State football teamed up with its Famous Idaho Potato Bowl opponent, Washington State, as both programs participated in the annual Tackle Hunger Event, held at Bishop Kelly High School Thursday afternoon. Together the teams packaged more than 40,000 meals.
During the Tackle Hunger Event, Representatives of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl announced this year's recipients of the Humanitarian Award, which is annually given to a student-athlete from each team for exemplary community service and leadership efforts and Utah State's winner was linebacker
Bronson Olevao Jr.
"Today was a great opportunity for us and Washington State to come together during this holiday season to give back to this community," said Olevao. "It was super fun to serve today, and it brought joy and happiness to our hearts."
The meals packaged by the teams consisted of rice, beans and vegetable casserole, consistent with The Idaho Foodbank's emphasis on nutrition. The delivery of the prepared meals will help close the gap on feeding the more than 250,000 Idahoans who face food insecurity during the holiday season and throughout the year.
"A lot of us (players) are involved with the community and coach (Bronco) Mendenhall, and his staff open a lot of opportunities for us to serve. I love to serve and there is always more that we can do to give back to our communities."
Olevao, a junior from Salt Lake City, Utah (Highland HS) is actively involved in community outreach in Cache Valley. Some of the many endeavors Olevao volunteers his time for include working with local elementary schools to help celebrate the reading achievements of its students and being an active participant with numerous events on campus working with youth.
Utah State and Washington State will face one another in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Monday, Dec. 22, at noon. The game will be televised on ESPN.
