LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis began Mountain West play with a resounding 4-0 sweep of San Diego State on Sunday at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
 
With the victory, the Aggies begin their defense of last season's regular season MW title at 1-0 and stand at 5-2 overall.
  
Doubles
The Aggies dominated doubles play from the opening serve as senior Sergi Micó Fenollar and sophomore Keanu Rigby scored a 6-2 win at the third position of the lineup. Senior David Martirosian and freshman Eliot Nobel then clinched the opening point for USU with a 6-3 victory at the top spot in the lineup. At the second position, sophomore Mohammad Alkotop and freshman Dmitri Goubin also led, 5-2, at the time the doubles point was clinched.
 
Singles
USU's momentum persisted into singles play as Micó Fenollar, Alkotop and freshman Roman Venger each scored 6-1 wins in the first set at the first, second and third positions, respectively. Venger was the first Aggie to win in singles play, registering a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot. At the second court, Alkotop then outlasted his Aztec opponent in a second-set tiebreak to put Utah State up 3-0 after a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory. In a three-set battle at the top spot of the lineup, Micó Fenollar delivered the clinching point for the Aggie victory with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win, also breaking serve for the final point of the match. 
 
At the fourth position, Goubin bounced back to win his second set, 6-4, before the match was abandoned. At No. 5 singles, Nobel also had built a lead after winning the first set, 6-3, before his match was also left unfinished.
 
Next Up
Utah State heads back into non-conference play and to the road for a pair of matches in Denver, Colorado. The Aggies will face Denver on Friday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. (MT), before a neutral contest against Jacksonville State on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2:30 p.m. (MT).
