Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Utah State women's basketball led by as many as nine on the road at New Mexico before falling late to the Lobos, 73-65, on Saturday afternoon at the Pit.
In a game featuring the two fastest teams in the Mountain West by possessions per game, the contest began as a defensive battle. Utah State's defense proved suffocating in the first half as the Aggies forced 16 Lobo turnovers in the first 20 minutes, including 10 in the first quarter alone. New Mexico's defense also proved stifling, however, as USU led by only four at the end of the opening frame following a layup from senior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs.
Both offenses began to find rhythm in the second quarter. Stubbs and freshman guard
Carlie Latta both hit 3-pointers to give the Aggies their biggest lead of the first half at 23-18. The Lobos answered with a 9-0 run to jump back in front in the final minutes of the half. Junior guard
Jamisyn Heaton then scored the next five points for USU to send the game into halftime tied at 28.
Heaton continued her points streak with a layup to start the second half, sparking the Aggies to a 9-2 run. USU maintained its advantage throughout the quarter as Stubbs scored 12 of her 21 points in the third frame while Latta drained two 3-pointers. New Mexico responded with a 12-3 run stretching into the fourth quarter to retake the lead. The Aggies answered back with layups from junior center
Sophie Sene and junior guard Isabella Tañedo to jump back in front at 57-54 with seven minutes remaining..
Over the next three minutes, New Mexico embarked on a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game larger than four points. Junior guard
Mia Tarver hit a 3-pointer to bring the Aggies back within four but a subsequent 6-0 burst from the Lobos secured the comeback win for the home side.
Stubbs' 21 points was a team-high for the Aggies, as were her seven rebounds and three assists. Heaton finished with 13 points and added six rebounds and a team-high four steals. Latta added nine points and led USU with career-best two blocks.
