Men’s Tennis Set for Seven-Team Tournament at Arizona State

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis heads to Tempe, Arizona, to participate in the ASU Invite on Friday through Saturday, Feb. 28 through March 1. The Aggies begin the tournament against No. 49 Washington on Friday at noon. USU, ranked 68th in the latest ITA rankings, will then have a pair of matches on Saturday against a tournament field that includes No. 41 Arizona State, No. 9 Arizona, UTSA, No. 29 Boise State and Liberty.

HISTORY
Utah State is 1-4 all-time versus Washington, defeating the Huskies, 4-2, as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in 2019. Washington won the most recent matchup, 7-0, in Seattle on Jan. 28, 2022.
 
The Aggies are 0-2 all-time against Arizona State, losing to the Sun Devils in 1979 and most recent in 2021 as part of the ASU Invite.
 
Utah State is 1-4 all-time against Arizona after falling to the Wildcats, 7-0, earlier this season. The Aggies lone win over Arizona was a 4-3 victory on Feb. 10, 2017.
 
USU holds a 4-1 series record against UTSA and has won four straight against the Roadrunners, including a 4-3 victory in San Antonio last season.
 
The lone other Mountain West participant in the ASU Invite, Utah State is 12-38 all-time against Boise State, but has won 10 of the previous 13 matches, including a 4-3 win at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club in Logan last season.
 
Utah State has never faced off against Liberty in its program history. 
 
ICYMI
USU went 1-1 in a pair of matches in Denver, Colorado, last week. The Aggies fell short against Denver, 5-2, with sophomore Mohammad Alkotop and freshman Eemil Pasanen scoring singles wins for USU at the second and sixth positions, respectively. Utah State then defeated Jacksonville State in a neutral match, 4-3. After dropping the doubles point to the Gamecocks, the Aggies stormed back in singles play with wins from senior Sergi Micó Fenollar, Alkotop and freshmen Roman Venger and Dmitri Goubin at the top four positions of the lineup to secure the victory.
 
TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN
Utah State senior Sergi Micó Fenollar was named the MW Player of the Week after going 4-0 across doubles and singles play in USU's wins over Idaho State and San Diego State. Micó Fenollar won both his singles matches at the No. 1 position, including delivering the clinching point against the Aztecs.
