Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
LOGAN, Utah – Needing a bucket late to stave off the Spartans, Utah State women's basketball turned both to its senior leader and its freshman up-and-comer.

Both delivered.

Senior guard Cheyenne Stubbs scored a season-high 30 points and freshman guard Carlie Latta added a career-high 20 points, both hitting pivotal 3-pointers late to lead the Aggies to an 82-75 victory over San José State on Wednesday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

In the first half, it was the Spartans who held much of the advantage as the visitors used an 11-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to take their largest lead of the night at 26-16. The Aggies closed the gap on the strength of a 3-pointer from Latta and a pair of triples from freshman Elise Livingston before another 5-0 burst from SJSU sent the Spartans into halftime with a 43-36 advantage.

After trading buckets over the first few minutes of the third quarter, USU swiftly erased SJSU's lead with a 10-0 run to retake the lead for the first time since the game's opening minutes. Junior guard Jamisyn Heaton sparked the run with a layup down low and Latta capped the run with a 3-pointer to send Utah State in front with 4:27 remaining in the third quarter.

Over the final 14-and-a-half minutes of game time, neither side led by more than four points until the Aggies were eventually able to salt the game away at the free throw line. Despite the close quarters, however, Utah State relinquished the lead only briefly at the start of the fourth quarter. After a pair of Spartan buckets and FTs put SJSU ahead 65-63, freshman guard/forward Taliyah Logwood tied the game with a driving layup before Stubbs hit her first 3 of the night to again put Utah State ahead. After the Spartans re-tied the game with a triple of their own, Stubbs got loose inside for a layup to put the Aggies ahead for good.

San José State hit a pair of 3s in the final minutes to cut USU's lead to a single point, but each 3 was answered by an Aggie 3-pointer in kind as Stubbs then Latta each hit from beyond the arc to preserve Utah State's lead.

In the final minute, the Aggies managed to ice the game on the offensive end with free throws while stymieing the Spartans on the defensive end to secure the 82-75 victory.

Stubbs scored 22 of her 30 points after halftime and finished the game shooting 8-of-17 from the field and 2-of-6 from behind the arc. Stubbs also went 12-of-16 from the FT line, setting career-highs for both makes and attempts, and added four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Latta's 20 points came on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting, including a 4-of-7 showing from 3-point range. Latta also added four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Heaton and junior center Sophie Sene tied for the team lead with eight rebounds apiece, while Heaton also tied alongside Stubbs for the team lead with four assists each. Heaton also posted a team-high two blocks and added eight points. Each of Livingston, Logwood and junior guard Mia Tarver added six points while Tarver also tied for the team lead alongside Stubbs with two steals.

As a team, Utah State shot 28-of-58 (48.3 percent) from the field, its second-best shooting performance of the season, and went 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) from 3-point range. USU also shot 18-of-26 from the free throw line. Both teams recorded 15 turnovers but the Aggies outscored the Spartans off of those turnovers, 18-6. Utah State also held a 40-38 edge in points in the paint and a 14-8 advantage in points off the bench.
