OGDEN, Utah – Utah State softball (19-15, 4-2 MW) lost to Weber State Monday afternoon at WSU's Wildcat Softball Field, falling 7-6.
The Aggies struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single from redshirt junior catcher/infielder
Kaylee Erickson, but was tasked with playing from behind for the final four innings after allowing three Weber State home runs in the third inning to fall behind 4-1.
In the fourth, USU narrowed the gap to a single run with a 2-RBI single by senior infielder
Claudia Medina, but the Wildcats countered with two more runs of their own to make it a 6-3 ballgame. The Aggies loaded the bases in the fifth, but all three runners were left stranded as Weber State then extended its lead with another run in the bottom of the inning.
Despite the 7-3 deficit, Utah State put up a fight to the finish. In the sixth, the Aggies used an RBI single out to left field by senior infielder
Giselle Gonzalez to inch closer, then pulled within a single run once again when senior outfielder
Olivia Marble delivered a shot to left field to bring in two more runs. However, despite scoring three runs in the inning, the Aggies left the bases loaded for the second-straight inning. In need of a run to stay alive, USU was able to produce a hit in the top of the seventh, but couldn't even things up.
In total, Utah State had eight hits to Weber State's 10, going 8-for-26 (.308) at the plate with two extra base hits. Fifita led the Aggies' hitting efforts with a 3-for-5 performance and a run scored. Medina was the only other USU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored.
Four Aggies saw time in the pitching circle. Junior
Emmalyn Brinka pitched the first 2.2 innings and was awarded the loss after allowing four earned runs. Junior
Denay Smith took over in the third and pitched 1.1 innings with three earned runs, before being relieved by junior
Carly Limosnero. Junior
Rylie Pindel took the final 1.2 innings, holding the Wildcats hitless.
