LOGAN, Utah – Five Utah State softball student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Seniors
Giselle Gonzalez and
Olivia Marble and juniors
Grace Matej,
Emmalyn Brinka and
Carly Limosnero earned the academic distinction. This marks the most academic all-district accolades in Utah State program history, up from last year's program-record mark of four. Gonzalez and Matej each earned the award last season as well.
Gonzalez graduated with a degree in psychology with a 3.7 cumulative GPA. She is a four-time Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Scholar-Athlete award recipient, and earned both Academic All-Mountain West and MW Scholar-Athlete honors each of the past two seasons. This season, she posted a .362 (59-for-163) batting average with four doubles and a program-record 17 home runs to earn all-Mountain West second team honors. She recorded 60 RBIs and 29 runs scored, posting a team-best .699 slugging percentage and a .440 on-base percentage. At first base, Gonzalez tallied 441 putouts and 10 assists with just five errors for a .989 fielding percentage.
Marble, who joined the Aggies for her senior season after beginning her career at Abilene Christian, earned a degree in dietetics with a 3.81 cumulative GPA. This season for the Aggies, Marble earned all-Mountain West honorable mention accolades this season after posting a .372 (58-for-156) batting average, third-best on the team. She recorded 13 doubles with three triples and three home runs for a slugging percentage of .551 and an on-base percentage of .446. She tallied 25 RBIs and 40 runs scored. While starting all 52 games in center field, Marble recorded 61 putouts and three assists.
Matej earned academic all-district honors for the second-straight year, as she holds a 3.71 cumulative GPA while working on a degree in international studies. Matej has earned Academic All-Mountain West, MW Scholar-Athlete and Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Scholar-Athlete accolades each year of her career at Utah State. This season, she was named to the all-Mountain West first team after posting a .372 (53-for-162) batting average with 11 doubles, a triple and 10 home runs. She recorded a .593 slugging percentage and a .433 on-base percentage, tallying 38 RBIs and 36 runs scored. As a catcher, Matej had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 65 putouts, 11 assists and no errors.
Brinka, a communication studies major, posted a 3.71 cumulative GPA in her first year as an Aggie. After transferring to USU from Montana, Brinka made 31 appearances in the pitching circle this season. She recorded 105.1 innings pitched with five complete games, going 9-10 with a 5.52 ERA. Brinka also recorded one putout and 34 assists with just two errors.
Limosnero is working on a degree in psychology, and currently holds a 3.73 cumulative GPA. The right-handed pitcher transferred to Utah State this season from California Baptist, and made 26 appearances in the pitching circle. She threw 57.2 innings and three complete games, including going the full 7.0 innings in USU's win over No. 19 Baylor. She made 10 starts and earned two saves on the year. Limosnero also recorded one putout and 10 assists.
