Football 8/29/2025 9:33:00 AM
LOGAN, Utah - A new era of Utah State football will be ushered in during the 2025 season following the hiring of veteran Bronco Mendenhall, who brings 18 years of head coaching experience with him to USU.

Mendenhall, who owns a 140-88 (.614) career record, has led 16 of his 18 teams to bowl eligibility, which ranks third among active FBS coaches, while his 140 career wins rank as the sixth-most. Combine that success with a USU program that has played in 11 bowls games, won two conference championships and five bowl games in the past 14 years, and has notched four 10-win seasons and been nationally ranked three times (2012, 2018, 2021) during that time as well, and Utah State football is positioned well for sustained success.

Mendenhall, who hired an entirely new coaching staff upon his arrival, has transformed the roster with the addition of 69 newcomers (O-26, D-36, S-7) to the program, which includes 29 four-year transfers (O-11, D-14, S-4), 13 junior college transfers (O-2, D-9, S-2) and 27 high school players (O-13, D-13, S-1). Collectively, the 29 four-year transfers have combined for 416 games played and 115 starts during their careers.

Mendenhall welcomes back four starters (O-1, D-3) and 18 letterwinners (O-10, D-8) from last year's squad in addition to seven returning redshirts (O-4, D-3) and 14 more players (O-8, D-6) that were members of the program in 2024.

Highlighting Utah State's returners in 2025 are three players that have garnered previous All-Mountain West recognition in graduate TE Broc Lane, senior DT Gabriel Iniguez Jr. and senior S Ike Larsen. Iniguez earned honorable mention All-MW honors last season, while Lane was an honorable mention MW selection in 2023. Larsen garnered first-team All-MW accolades in 2023 and was named a College Football News Honorable Mention All-American. In 2022, he was named second-team All-MW and a College Football News Honorable Mention Freshman All-American.

Other starters returning for Utah State in 2025 include graduate TE Josh Sterzer and senior ILB John Miller.

Utah State returns six more players who have made starts with the Aggies in junior OL Tavo Motu'apuaka (7), senior OLB Enoka Migao (5), senior QB Bryson Barnes (3), senior OL Trey Andersen (2), senior DT Bo Maile (1) and junior OL George Maile (1).

In addition to the players mentioned above, Utah State has nine newcomers on its roster with at least five career starts at the Division I level in senior CB Dylan Tucker (23), senior CB Noah Avinger (20), senior DT Naki Fahina (19), senior S Bryson Taylor (14), sophomore S Brevin Hamblin (14), junior DT Tyree Morris (12), senior OL Jake Eichorn (11), junior WR Corey Thompson Jr. (7) and senior WR Demick Starling (5).

With a disciplined, physical approach rooted in toughness and execution, Mendenhall's Utah State football team is built to outlast and outwork its opponents. Emphasizing ball control, situational awareness, and a relentless, gap-sound defense, the Aggies are poised to bring a hard-nosed brand of football back to Logan, one capable of contending for a Mountain West Championship this fall.

QUARTERBACKS
Utah State returns one of the most electric dual-threat quarterbacks in the Mountain West in graduate Bryson Barnes. In his first year in the program in 2024, Barnes appeared in nine games, including three starts, and accounted for 1,386 yards of total offense. Barnes completed 77-of-126 (.611) passes for 856 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions and threw multiple touchdown passes in five games, including three in each of his final two contests. He also rushed for 530 yards and five touchdowns on 68 carries (7.8 ypc). Barnes was named the MW Offensive Player of the Week and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week following his performance against San Diego State (11/23) as he accounted for four touchdowns and had 332 yards of total offense as he came off the bench in the second quarter. Against the Aztecs, he set the single-game school record for rushing yards by a quarterback as he gained a career-high 193 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown for his first career 100-yard rushing game. The following weekend, he rushed for 185 yards on a career-high 24 carries and one touchdowns at Colorado State (11/29) to become the first quarterback in school history to rush for 100 yards in consecutive games.

Utah State returns two more players here that were part of the program last season in graduate Jacob Conover and sophomore CJ Tiller. Conover appeared in two games for the Aggies in 2024 and was 2-of-4 passing for 22 yards as he played against Utah (9/14) and San Diego State (11/23). Tiller did not appear in any games last year.

Joining the quarterback room are a pair of newcomers in sophomore transfer Anthony Garcia (Sacramento, Calif./Capital Christian HS/Arizona) and freshman Kaden Cox (Millville, Utah/Ridgeline HS). Garcia appeared in one game last season at Arizona and redshirted the previous year at San José State. As a prep senior, he completed 146-of-250 (.584) passes for 2,689 yards with 34 touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for 553 yards (8.3 ypr) and scored eight touchdowns. Cox completed 638-of-941 (.678) passes for 8,492 yards with 98 touchdowns and 20 interceptions from his sophomore to senior season at Ridgeline HS. As a senior in 2021, Cox was named the Utah Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year as he was 253-of-356 (.711) passing for 3,774 yards with 55 touchdowns and two interceptions.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Utah State's wide receivers room returns just three players from last season in senior Kahanu Davis, sophomore Jackson Olsen, and redshirt freshman Tate Kjar. However, none of those players had a reception in 2024. Davis appeared in eight games, mostly on special teams, while Olsen played in two games and Kjar did not appear in any games. During his redshirt season in 2023, Davis appeared in four games and had two catches.

To offset the lack of production returning from this group, Utah State brought in a wealth of experience with 11 newcomers, including five four-year transfers and one junior college player, to go along with three high school signees.

Senior Demick Starling (Nashville, Tenn./East Nashville Magnet HS/Western Kentucky) is the most experienced transfer to the program as he has played in 36 games with four starts at both Western Kentucky (2024) and Virginia (2020-23) and has caught 14 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior Braden Pegan (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./San Juan Hills HS/UCLA) is another four-year transfer who will look to make an immediate impact at USU after spending the past two  years at UCLA (2022-24) as he appeared in 13 games with one start across three seasons.

The final four-year transfer to join the wide receivers group is redshirt freshman Carlos Orr-Gillespie (Etowah, Tenn./Gatlinburg-Pittman HS/Illinois) who redshirted during the 2024 season at Illinois and did not appear in any games.

Newcomers here include sophomore Cade Baker (Highland, Utah/Lone Peak HS/Saddleback College) and freshmen Nikko Boncore (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial HS), Kaleb Mitchell (Dallas, Texas/First Baptist Academy) and Ty Olsen (San Diego, Calif./Lincoln HS). Highlighting this group is Mitchell, who caught 46 passes for 959 yards (20.8 ypr) and eight touchdowns as a prep senior to earn first-team All-State honors, while Olsen caught 53 passes for 903 yards (17.0 ypr) and 12 touchdowns during his senior season to earn first-team All-State accolades.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Despite returning 11 players along the offensive line from the 2024 campaign, only two of those players saw significant playing time last season in senior Trey Andersen and junior George Maile. Andersen played in 10 games with two starts in his first season with the program a year ago as he played a total of 185 snaps and had eight knockdowns.
