LUBBOCK, Texas — Utah State soccer (2-3-2, 0-0-0 MW) fell on the road to RV Texas Tech, allowing a pair of late goals in a 2-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Texas Tech's John Walker Soccer Complex.
The contest began as a defensive battle, the teams combining for just five shots and a single shot on the goal through the first 40 minutes of action. Each team had a quality look in the final five minutes of the first half, but went into the locker room scoreless at the break. Through 45 minutes, Texas Tech had four shots to USU's three.
The game remained scoreless until the 52nd minute, when Utah State opened up a 1-0 advantage. A pass back just inches from the endline from senior forward Tess Werts found junior midfielder Summer Diamond directly in front of the goal. A single touch off the left foot of Diamond put the ball into the back of the net.
The Aggie advantage was short-lived, however. A perfectly-placed corner in the 55th minute by Texas Tech resulted in a header at the far post to equalize. That deadlock held until the 75th minute, when a foul given inside of the box resulted in a penalty kick, which was punched in by the Red Raiders to take the lead.
