Football’s Bryson Barnes Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State quarterback Bryson Barnes has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Sept. 14. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
 
With their sponsorship of the student-athlete of the week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
 
It is the first time this year and second time in his career he has won the weekly award.
 
America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week
Bryson Barnes, Quarterback (6-2, 210, Gr., Milford, Utah/Milford HS/Utah)
  • Accounted for 331 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in Utah State's 49-30 Mountain West home win against Air Force.
  • Was 17-of-22 passing for 287 yards and two touchdowns and added 44 rushing yards on 15 carries and a career-high three touchdowns.
  • His 287 passing yards are the second-most of his career, including the most in his two years with USU.
  • Is the second player in program history to post three rushing touchdowns and pass for two more in the same game, along with Levi Williams, who accomplished the feat against New Mexico in 2023.

Utah State continues its 2025 season this weekend as it hosts McNeese in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. The game will be televised regionally on KMYU and streamed on the Mountain West Network.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:
Men's Cross Country – Sophomore Joshua McKee (Marshfield, Wis.) won the 7K race at the Utah-hosted Beehive Invitational in Salt Lake City on Friday. His finishing time of 21:18:47 led the Aggie men to a first-place team finish out of three teams with 28 points, defeating Utah Valley on a head-to-head tiebreaker. In his first competition of the 2025 season, McKee earned the first individual title of his Aggie cross country career.
 
Women's Cross Country – Junior Shelby Jensen (Saratoga Springs, Utah) finished in third place, second-best among all collegiate runners, in the 5K race at the Utah-hosted Beehive Invitational in Salt Lake City on Friday. In her first competition since the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she posted a time of 17:52:20, her best career cross country 5K time, to lead the Aggies to a third-place team finish out of five teams with 47 points. Jensen's third-place individual finish was also the best of her cross country career.
 
Golf – Sophomore Chase Goetschel (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) tied for 39th at 10-over 220 (72-75-73) in his Aggie debut at the Colorado State-hosted Ram Masters Invitational. Goetschel, who carded eight birdies during the tournament, helped USU tie for 15th in the 16-team field at 63-over 903 (300-303-300).
 
Soccer – Senior forward Kaylie Chambers (Arvada, Colorado) helped Utah State to a 1-1 record last week with a 2-1 home win against Weber State and a 2-1 loss at Texas Tech. Against the Wildcats, Chambers recorded a goal and an assist, scoring the game's first goal in the 65th minute, then assisting on a goal just two minutes later in the 67th minute. Chambers took two shots in the game, including one on frame. Against the Red Raiders, Chambers tallied one shot while playing 80 minutes. On the week, Chambers recorded one goal, one assist and three shots while playing 137 total minutes.
 
Men's Tennis – Sophomore Brody Nejedly-Krall (Rancho Mirage, California) recorded three singles and two doubles wins to lead Utah State last weekend at the Boise State Invite. Playing alongside sophomore Eemil Pasanen, Nejedly-Krall earned a 6-3 and a 7-6 (3) win over opponents from Idaho State and Portland, respectively. In singles action, Nejedly-Krall defeated Portland's Eli Noel, 6-4, 6-3, and Idaho State's Tyler Dalos, 6-1, 6-4. He closed the weekend with a three-set win over ISU's Rafael Maya, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4).
 
Women's Tennis – Freshman Terezia Mlkva (Piestany, Slovakia) won her doubles draw at the Jon Messick Invitational in Fort Collins, Colorado, alongside sophomore Natalie Paterova. The duo defeated Weber State's Savannah and Naomi Johnson, 6-2, and Air Force's Alba Martinez and Joselyn Limbago, 6-4, to win the draw. In singles play, Mlkva defeated Montana State's Angel Bean, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-4, and won by retirement to reach the finals of her draw.
 
Volleyball – Sophomore outside hitter Mara Štiglic (Rijeka, Croatia) led the Aggies with 22 kills during a pair of 3-0 losses at No. 5 Stanford and versus UC Davis. Against the Cardinal, Štiglic posted a team-high 10 kills and added a pair of blocks. Štiglic again led the Aggies against UC Davis with 12 kills, also leading the team with two service aces and three blocks.
