Volleyball’s Loryn Helgesen Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball sophomore opposite side hitter Loryn Helgesen has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Sept. 28. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
 
With their sponsorship of the student-athlete of the week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
 
It is Helgesen's first time in her career being named the USU Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
Helgesen led Utah State with 29 kills during a pair of Mountain West wins at New Mexico (3-0) and at Grand Canyon (3-0), hitting .478 on 46 total attempts. She recorded a .704 hitting percentage against the Lopes, recording 20 kills with one error on 27 attempts, setting a program record for hitting percentage of 20-plus attempts and ranking as the highest hitting percentage by a non-senior in a conference match in MW history (min. 10 kills). Against the Lobos, Helgesen recorded nine kills on a .158 hitting percentage. She also added three aces during the week, two versus the Lobos and one against the Lopes.

The Aggies return to Logan for their first home conference matches of 2025. Utah State will host San José State on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. (MT), before facing Boise State on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. (MT).

FOOTBALL – Graduate quarterback Bryson Barnes (Milford, Utah) was 15-of-22 passing for 161 yards with a season-high-tying three touchdowns in Utah State's 55-35 loss at No. 18 Vanderbilt. Barnes also rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries as he finished the game with 209 yards of total offense.
 
GOLF – Sophomore Chase Goetschel (Trabuco Canyon, California) tied for 24th at 1-under 215 (74-68-73) at the Air Force-hosted Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational as he helped Utah State tie for sixth-place out of 23 teams with a 7-under 857 (287-286-284).
 
SOCCER – Senior forward Kaylie Chambers (Arvada, Colorado) helped Utah State to a 1-0-1 week to open Mountain West play with a 1-1 draw against Colorado State and a 3-0 win against Wyoming. Against the Rams, Chambers took two shots, both of which were on frame, while playing 65 minutes. Against the Cowgirls, Chambers scored in the first minute then assisted on a goal in the 53rd minute. She took a team-high four shots, two of which were on goal. On the week, Chambers totaled a goal, an assist and team-bests of six shots and four shots on goal in 111 minutes. 
 
MEN'S TENNIS – Sophomore Dmitri Goubin (Plano, Texas) won his singles draw at the Air Force-hosted Bedford Cup in the Mountains and also posted a 3-1 record in doubles play on the weekend. In singles play, Goubin opened the tournament with a three-set win over Idaho's Valentin Glasl before posting straight-set wins over opponents from Denver and Northern Arizona to reach the final where he won, 6-3, 6-2, over Air Force's Tyler Leaird for the title. In doubles play alongside junior teammate Keanu Rigby, the duo earned victories over two partnerships from New Mexico State plus a duo from Idaho.
