BOISE, Idaho – Utah State men's basketball dealt Boise State its largest home loss of this century, continuing its run of dominance with a 93-68 victory Saturday night at ExtraMile Arena. With the win, the Aggies remain perfect in Mountain West play and improve to 14-1 on the year.
In 62 all-time meetings between the Aggies and the Broncos, this was USU's largest-ever win in Boise, and second-largest overall.
Utah State was led by the league's top scorer, senior guard MJ Collins Jr., who showed out with a game-high 25 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting night. This was the ninth 20-plus point showing of the year for Collins Jr., and his 10th time leading the team's scoring efforts.
Junior guard Mason Falslev also put on an all-around performance, going for 16 points along with a team-best nine boards, five assists, three steals and a block.
The Aggies pounced right from the start and never looked back, scoring the first 10 points of the contest in just two minutes to trigger an immediate timeout by the hosts. Utah State continued to pile on throughout the half, never letting the Broncos string two baskets together, as they shot 61 percent in the half while limiting Boise State to just 28 percent shooting.
At the half, USU was doubling up Boise State 46-23.
The Broncos showed life for the first time following the break, making a push as they scored nine of the first 12 points of the second half. They were able to whittle the deficit to 16 points, but that's as close as they would get as Utah State once again answered in resounding fashion with a 23-10 run.
While Boise State saw its shooting efficiency make a jump in the second half, the Aggie lead continued to climb. USU led by as many as 32 points, with Collins Jr. scoring 13 of his 25 points in the second half.
Defensive pressure created opportunities for USU throughout the night. Utah State forced 12 Bronco turnovers, which were converted into 23 Aggie points. It also dominated the paint, out-scoring the hosts down low 40-26.
Along with big scoring nights from Collins Jr. and Falslev, senior guard Drake Allen played a big role with a season-best 14 points on an extremely efficient 6-of-7 night from the field. Allen also led the game with eight assists, while committing just a single turnover.
The Aggie bench contributed 27 points, led by an eight-point effort by senior guard Kolby King and a seven-point night for junior forward Karson Templin.
In total, Utah State shot 56.9 percent (33-of-58) from the floor, 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from 3-point range and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) at the charity stripe. Boise State shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the field, 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from behind the arc and 76.0 percent (19-of-25) at the free throw line.
