ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Despite holding New Mexico to its third-lowest scoring output of the season, Utah State women's basketball fell on the road to the Lobos, 58-33, on Saturday afternoon at The Pit.
Senior center
Sophie Sene opened the scoring with a layup in the low post. Freshman guard
Paloma Munoz Herreros then answered a 9-0 run from the Lobos but the Aggies were unable to stem the tide as New Mexico closed the opening quarter on a 10-2 run to take a double-digit advantage into the second frame. Despite a pair of layups from Sene plus baskets from junior guard
Aaliyah Gayles and senior guard/forward
Jamisyn Heaton, the Aggie offense was unable to eat into the deficit as the Lobos built a 36-18 lead heading into halftime.
USU opened the second half on a 6-0 run that featured back-to-back layups by Sene, cutting the deficit to 12 points at 36-24. The Aggie defense held firm in the third quarter, holding the Lobos to only four points in the frame. After a quick start out of the locker rooms, however, USU was unable to further cut into the lead. New Mexico then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to reclaim and maintain momentum en route to the win.
Sene led the Aggies with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, also adding four rebounds, two steals and tying her career-high with three blocks. Returning from injury, Heaton added four points and a team-high five rebounds and four steals.
Utah State shot 28.3 percent (13-of-46) from the floor and went 1-of-19 from 3-point range. The Aggie defense held the Lobos to their third-lowest scoring output of the season, holding New Mexico to 34.4 percent (22-of-64) from the field and 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from 3-point range.
