LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men's basketball secured a regular-season sweep over Boise State with a lockdown defensive effort Wednesday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, holding the Broncos to their lowest scoring performance of the season in a 75-56 win.
Against the Mountain West's third-highest scoring offense, USU limited the Broncos to just 56 points on 37 percent shooting. In the previous six games entering tonight, Boise State had averaged 86.5 points per contest.
Senior forward Zach Keller sparked the Aggie offense early in one of his strongest performances of the season, as he accounted for USU's first seven points and first three rebounds of the game. Keller would go on to finish the contest with 10 points and a team-high seven boards, along with two assists and a steal.
After several early lead changes, Boise State used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take their largest lead of the night, a seven-point advantage for the visitors. The Aggies answered emphatically, however, holding the Broncos to just a single bucket in the final eight minutes of the half as they closed the period with a 16-2 run to take a 30-23 lead at the break.
In the second half, Utah State saw its shooting numbers shoot from 44 percent to 65 percent as it remained in command through the entirety of the final 20 minutes. The seven-point halftime lead quickly expanded to double-digits, eventually climbing to as many as 24 points, while the Aggie defense continued to suffocate. USU forced 12-straight missed 3-pointers, holding Boise State without a made field goal for over seven minutes.
Junior guard Mason Falslev found his rhythm in the second half to help spark the Aggies, as he followed a four-point first half with 13 in the second to lead the team's scoring efforts, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor in the second half. He would also finish with three rebounds, an assist and a steal in 31 minutes of action.
Along with Falslev and Keller, two other Aggies scored in double-figures as senior guard MJ Collins Jr. went for 13 points, while freshman forward Adlan Elamin finished with 10.
In total, Utah State shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from 3-point range and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) at the charity stripe. Boise State shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from behind the arc and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) at the free throw line.
