W: Cochran, Kendall (3-1)
L: WICKUM, Riley (3-3)
POCATELLO, Idaho – Utah State softball (13-15, 2-1 MW) picked up a road win on Tuesday afternoon in Pocatello, defeating Idaho State 2-1 at Miller Ranch Stadium.
Freshman right-hander Kendall Cochran led the way for the Aggies in what turned out to be a pitcher's duel, as she threw the full 7.0 innings with a career-best seven strikeouts and just four hits and a single earned run allowed. This was the second complete game of Cochran's young career.
After each side recorded just a single hit with no runs in the first three innings, the Bengals struck first in the fourth as a walk and stolen base followed by a base hit brought one across for the hosts to make it 1-0.
Utah State didn't generate its first hit until the fifth inning, but then a big sixth inning helped the Aggies pull ahead. Following a lead-off single by sophomore outfielder Faith Kroening and a fielder's choice by senior catcher Grace Matej, senior catcher Kaylee Erickson sent a shot over the left field fence to empty the bags and make it 2-1. This was the fourth home run of the season for Erickson, and the 13th of her career.
The Bengals made a late push, loading the bases with three-straight walks while down to their final out in the seventh, but a line drive to first was snagged by Erickson to secure the USU win.
Each side recorded four hits with no errors in the contest.
