Match Recap: Men's Tennis |
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - Utah State men's tennis remained perfect in Mountain West play with a 4-0 sweep at New Mexico on Friday at the Randy Briggs Tennis Bubbles. The win is also USU's fourth-consecutive sweep, tying a program record set three times previously in 2024, 2017 and 2016.

Doubles
The Aggies proved dominant early as sophomores Eliot Nobel and Roman Venger cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles to begin the match. Both matches at the top two spots were pushed to a tiebreaker, however. At the top spot, sophomore Xavier Calvelo and freshman Jakub Medved pulled through for a 7-6 (3) victory to claim the doubles point and 1-0 lead for USU. At a tiebreak at No. 2 doubles, senior Jean-Baptiste Badon and sophomore Dmitri Goubin held a 4-2 lead at the time the doubles point was clinched and the match left unfinished.

Singles
The Aggies maintained control moving to singles play, winning the first set at five of six courts and racking up three straight-set victories to take the match. At the fifth spot, Medved continued a strong run of play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory to double Utah State's lead. Venger followed shortly after with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Calvelo then won the honors of the clinching point at the second position, taking a 6-3, 6-1 win to secure the Aggie win.

At the top spot of the lineup, Badon took the opening set, 6-4, and was tied at 3-3 in the second when the match was clinched. At No. 4 singles, Nobel was near a victory himself as he held a 6-2, 4-2 lead before leaving the match unfinished. At the sixth position, Goubin rebounded from a dropped first set to hold a 5-1 lead in the second set before the clinching point was earned.
