LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (14-20, 3-6 MW) dropped the final contest of a three-game series against No. 23 Grand Canyon Sunday afternoon at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field, losing 7-0.
While the Aggies held GCU to just six hits, its fewest in a conference game this season, USU struggled to generate any offense of its own. Utah State didn't find its first hit of the contest until the fifth inning, and tallied just two in total.
Five of the Lopes' seven runs came in the second and third innings, as they scored two and three runs in those innings, respectively. While GCU generated just six hits and left six runners stranded, walks were costly for the Aggies as they walked seven total batters on the day. Leading 5-0 after three, Grand Canyon would tack on another single run in each the fourth and fifth innings, before going scoreless the rest of the way.
USU's hits belonged to senior outfielder Kya Pratt, a double, and a single by freshman infielder Jazmin Ramirez.
Three pitchers saw time in the circle for the Aggies. Freshman Kendall Cochran started and took the first 1.1 innings, before senior Denay Smith took the next 1.1. Senior Rylie Pindel went the rest of the way, pitching 4.1 innings with just two hits and one earned run allowed.
