LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (18-26, 6-11 MW) overcame a four-run deficit en route to a 6-5 walk-off victory in eight innings Friday afternoon at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field, defeating San José State in the first game of a three-game weekend series.
The Spartans scored four of their five runs before recording their second out of the day, tasking the Aggies with playing from behind early on. Despite the early deficit, Utah State was resilient. USU got on the board in the second when a double from freshman infielder Kate Vance scored senior catcher Grace Matej from second. Sophomore catcher Jaelyn Castillo immediately followed with a sacrifice fly to score freshman infielder Jazmin Ramirez and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Utah State continued to surge in the third, taking the lead with three runs. After a leadoff double by senior outfielder Kya Pratt, senior infielder Kaylee Erickson brought her home with an RBI double. Matej continued the scoring in the next at-bat with an RBI triple. Following a Spartan pitching change, Ramirez hit a single to right center to score Matej and make it a 5-4 ballgame. SJSU then evened it in the fourth, before scoreless innings for both sides in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
While the Spartans went down in order to start the eighth inning, Utah State led off the bottom of the inning with a triple for junior infielder Keely Goushá, the second of her career. The Aggies then loaded the bases with a pair of walks, before a walk-off hit for Erickson bounced into the wall in right field to secure the victory.
In total, Utah State recorded 13 hits to San José State's eight, led by two-hit performances from Pratt, Erickson, Matej and Goushá.
Freshman right-hander Kendall Cochran started in the pitching circle for USU, and was relieved in the first by senior Rylie Pindel, who took the Aggies the rest of the way. In 7.2 innings, Pindel didn't allow a single earned run, facing 30 batters with just four hits.
