Game Recap: Softball |

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (19-27, 7-12 MW) secured a three-game series win over San José State Sunday afternoon at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field, defeating the Spartans 7-6.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Aggies pounced first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore catcher Jaelyn Castillo and junior infielder Keely Goushá scored freshman infielders Jazmin Ramirez and Kate Vance to make it 2-0. SJSU responded quickly with a pair of runs of its own in the third, but USU once again gained control in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by senior catcher Grace Matej. This was the third home run of the weekend for Matej, who had two in yesterday's contest.

The sides traded leads in the sixth with a pair of grand slams. While the visitors momentarily pulled ahead 6-3 in the top of the inning, senior outfielder Kya Pratt answered the call with a four-run blast of her own. Both slams of the inning came with two outs on the board.

Utah State finished the day with 11 hits to San José State's 12, led by two each from Matej, Ramirez and Castillo. Matej finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and a walk, and Castillo went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.

Freshman right-hander Kendall Cochran started the game and pitched the first 5.0 innings for Utah State with three earned runs, before senior Rylie Pindel took the final 2.0 innings with three earned runs to earn the win.
