LAS VEGAS - Utah State men's tennis opened the Mountain West Tournament with a dominant 4-0 win over eighth-seeded Nevada on Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center. The top-seeded Aggies will face the winner between UNLV and Grand Canyon tomorrow at 6 p.m. (MT), marking their fifth-straight appearance in the conference semifinals.
Doubles
USU proved stalwart again in doubles, swiftly taking a 1-0 lead with wins at the first and third positions. At court three, sophomore
Eliot Nobel and
Roman Venger combined for a 6-1 victory, setting up sophomore
Xavier Calvelo and freshman
Jakub Medved to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the top spot in the lineup. At No. 2 doubles, senior
Jean-Baptiste Badon and sophomore
Dmitri Goubin also led, 5-3, at the time the point was clinched.
Singles
The Aggie momentum carried over to singles play as Utah State earned straight-set victories at the third, fifth and sixth positions to wrap up the quarterfinal victory. Medved was the first Aggie across the finish line with a 6-2, 6-1 win at court five to double USU's lead before Goubin then put the team on the brink of victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the sixth spot. Venger then won the race to the clinching point, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at court three.
Utah State also had plenty of backup from the remainder of the lineup. At No. 1 singles, Badon held a 6-4, 6-5 lead at the time the match was clinched. And after each dropping the first set, both Calvelo and Nobel rebounded to win the second frame at the second and fourth positions, respectively, and were battling in decisive third sets before leaving their matches unfinished.
