SAN DIEGO – Utah State softball (15-21, 4-7 MW) fell to San Diego State, 9-1 in five innings, at SDSU Softball Stadium on Friday night.
Utah State 1, San Diego State 9 (5)
USU couldn't carry over its clutch hitting from Thursday night into its second meeting with San Diego State, losing 9-1 in five innings.
SDSU once again scored in the opening frame, taking a 1-0 lead on a two-out, solo home run. Both teams went down in order in second before the Aztec bats broke through in the bottom of the third. SDSU employed small ball to score their second run of the evening before hitting a two-run, two-out home run to increase their lead to four.
USU got its first offense going in the top of the fourth. Senior outfielder
Kya Pratt and senior infielder
Alex Bunton hit a pair of singles, but the Aggies stranded two runners in scoring position. In the bottom of the frame, SDSU got traffic on the basepaths early and scored four runs to take an 8-0 lead.
Senior catcher
Grace Matej got the Aggies on the board in the top of the fifth with a leadoff home run to right field, her sixth of the year. The Aztecs regained their advantage and won the game on the strength of a leadoff double and an error in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman left-hander
Jordyn Lish started the game in the circle and pitched 2.2 innings, ultimately being charged with three earned runs on two hits and a walk. Senior
Carly Limosnero took over, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing five earned runs.
