SALT LAKE CITY – In the 114th meeting of the Battle of the Brothers, Utah State football could not keep up with No. 17 Utah in a 33-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

While the Aggie offense struggled in the first quarter, Utah built its lead with touchdown drives on its first two possessions. Former Aggie wide receiver Braden Pegan opened the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown catch from Devon Dampier before Utah's Byrd Ficklin pushed the Utes' lead to multiple possessions with a nine-yard TD run. The Aggie defense held firm in the red zone on the next possession, resulting in a 36-yard field goal from Utah's Dillon Curtis. 

Utah State then put together a pair of drives into Ute territory before both drives stalled out inside Utah's 40-yard line and resulted in punts. The Aggie built upon its strong play from the previous drive, this time holding Utah and Curtis to a 54-yard field goal before forcing a three-and-out on Utah's next possession. The resulting punt, however, touched an Aggie blocker and was recovered by Utah, leading to another TD reception by Pegan who hauled in a 37-yard pass from Dampier in the final minute of the half.

The Aggie defense continued to play well after the half, halting a pair of Utah drives in the third quarter. Junior safety Chapman Lewis took down Dampier for a tackle-for-loss on fourth down and on Utah's next drive, senior defensive tackle forced a fumble which was recovered by graduate linebacker Bronson Olevao Jr. at Utah's 28-yard line. Utah State gained a first down on the ensuing drive on an 11-yard gain by graduate running back Javen Jacobs but the drive ended with an interception in the end zone. Several plays later, Utah's Daniel Bray rushed 63 yards for a touchdown to further extend the lead.

Utah State pieced together a 13-play drive on the ensuing possession, using three plays of 10 yards or more to drive into the red zone before being stopped on 4th-and-1 at the eight-yard line. After both teams exchanged punts, the Aggie defense came through with another stop near midfield, also stopping the Utes on a fake punt attempt. A sack on USU's first play of the ensuing drive then thwarted the Aggies' attempt to drive further into Utah territory. The Utes were then able to run out the remaining clock to preserve the win.

Graduate quarterback Grady Brosterhous led USU with 130 yards on 15-of-29 passing with an interception, also adding 17 carries for 17 yards. Jacobs led the Aggies on the ground with five carries for 31 yards. Graduate wide receiver Anthony Garcia and sophomore running back Noah White added two carries for eight yards and one carry for two yards, respectively. Garcia also added two catches for five yards while White finished with two catches of 22 yards.

Graduate wide receiver Eli Wood led USU through the air, posting four catches for 47 yards, both team highs. Graduate wide receiver Demick Starling added three catches for 22 yards. Freshman wide receivers Kaina Watson and Nikko Boncore both added one reception for 12 and 10 yards, respectively.

Lewis recorded a career day to lead the Aggie defense, finishing with 11 total tackles and one TFL, both career-highs. Junior linebacker Asher Cunningham and senior safety Brevin Hamblin each added nine tackles. USU recorded a season-high seven TFLs, with Lewis, Cunningham, Olevao Jr., graduate linebacker James Jennette, sophomore linebacker Chris Joe and graduate linebacker BJ Diakite each posting a full TFL while graduate cornerback Kyle Stokes and  sophomore safety David Kabongo both had 0.5 TFLs. USU also had a season-high five pass breakups with Cunningham, Hamblin, sophomore cornerback Markie Grant, sophomore defensive tackle Carson Tujague and senior defensive tackle Ta'avili Tuitama each posting one PBU.

Utah State football returns to Maverik Stadium to host Troy in its nonconference finale on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 5:30 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
