Biography

INDIVIDUAL HONORS: Honorable All-Mountain West (2018, 2019).

2019 (SR): Earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors as he started 10 of the 13 games he played in... Finished the season ninth on the team, and first among defensive tackles, with 47 stops (19-solo, 28-assist)... Had 2.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss, while adding two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery... Had a season-high seven tackles, which included a career-high 1.0 sacks and a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss against No. 20 Boise State (11/23)... Also had a sack in the season-opener at Wake Forest (8/30)... Recovered his first-career fumble at New Mexico (11/30)... Finished the season with four tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss, against Kent State (12/20) in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl... Recorded multiple tackles in 12 of the 13 games he played in, and at least four stops in six of his final seven games.  

2018 (JR): Earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors at nose guard as he started all 12 games he played in during the season… Missed the New Mexico Bowl due to injury… Finished the season with 31 tackles (6-solo, 25-assist), which included 0.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss… Had a career-high nine tackles against Air Force (9/22)… Had four tackles, including 0.5 sacks, against New Mexico State (9/8)… Added four tackles against both Tennessee Tech (9/13) and UNLV (10/13)… Recorded three tackles at No. 11 Michigan State (8/31) and at Colorado State (11/17)… Had a season-high 1.0 tackles for loss against both Wyoming (10/20) and San José State (11/10)… Recorded at least one tackle in nine games and had multiple tackles in seven outings during the season. 

2017 (SO): Played in nine games, starting seven... Finished the season with 32 tackles (16-solo, 16-assist), including 4.5 tackles for loss, to rank third on the team... Added two quarterback hurries... Recorded at least two tackles in every game he played in, including a season-high five stops against both Colorado State (10/7) and Hawai’i (11/18)... Added a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss against the Rams... Had four tackles in back-to-back games against UNLV (10/21) and Boise State (10/28), and finished the year with four tackles against New Mexico State (12/29) in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl... Had 1.0 tackles for loss against UNLV, New Mexico (11/4) and Hawai’i... Recorded quarterback hurries against both Colorado State and Boise State. 

2016 (R-FR): Played in seven games and finished the season with 20 tackles (10-solo, 10-assist), which included 0.5 tackles for loss, while adding two pass breakups… Had a season-high six tackles against San Diego State (10/28) and recorded four stops at BYU (11/26)… Also had three tackles against both Wyoming (11/5) and New Mexico (11/12), to go along with two stops against Fresno State (10/22), and one tackle against Weber State (9/1)… His lone tackle for loss on the season came in the season opener against WSU, while his pass breakups were at Wyoming and at Nevada (11/19).

2015 (RS): Redshirted during his first season at Utah State. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Named the Inland Valley’s Defensive Player of the Year and was a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and all-Baseline League first-team selection and Defensive MVP as a linebacker as a prep senior at Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) High School as he recorded 50 tackles, which included 4.0 sacks and 5.0 tackles for loss... Also had two quarterback hurries... Earned first-team all-Baseline League honors as a prep junior as he recorded 66 tackles with 8.0 sacks helping the Cougars to an 11-2 record, a second-place finish in the conference and to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Inland playoffs... Was a three-year starter in high school. 

PERSONAL: One of seven children of Christopher and Ofa Unga... Brother, Uani, played football at Oregon State and BYU, and spent three years in the NFL with the New York Giants, along with one season as an assistant coach at USU... Brother, Paul, played football at Arizona State... Brother, Joe, played football at Midwestern State and spent four years in the NFL... Brother, Tui, played football at Hawai’i... Is related to former NFL players Reno Mahe and Fahu Tahi... Graduated from Utah State University in the fall of 2019 with a degree in sociology... Last name is pronounced Oo-nga.
