Gustavo Manzanares (pronounced Gu-sta-vo Man-zan-ares) is in his first year with Utah State’s football program as a graduate assistant coach for the Aggies’ defense. In his role, Manzanares assists the defensive coaches with daily football operations, primarily working with the defensive backs and secondary coach Julius Brown.
Prior to coming to Utah State, Manzanares spent four seasons as the secondary coach at City College of San Francisco, where he had seven defensive backs earn Division I scholarships, and a total of 16 defensive backs earn scholarships to four-year schools, in addition to one NFL Draftee -- Shalom Luani to the Oakland Raiders.
At City College of San Francisco in 2013, Manzanares helped the Rams finish first in the state with 25 interceptions and eight defensive scores, and first in passing yards allowed with an average of 176.8 per game. CCSF also ended the season as San Francisco Community Bowl Champions.
In 2014, City College of San Francisco limited opponents to 16.0 points per game, while intercepting 15 passes and scoring eight defensive touchdowns. CCSF’s defense also limited opponents to just 165.9 passing yards per game as the team finished as the California State Champion runner-up.
In 2015, City College of San Francisco won the California State and National Champions. Defensively, the Rams limited opponents to 17.4 points a game as it had four defensive scores and allowed just 207.8 passing yards per game, while intercepting 23 passes.
In 2016, City College played in the San Francisco Community College Bowl.
Prior to City College of San Francisco, Manzanares spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons at West Catholic Athletic Leagues St. Ignatius College Preparatory (San Francisco) as the defensive backs coach, passing game coordinator, and strength & conditioning coach. In 2012, St. Ignatius won the CIF Division I Central Coast Section Championship and advance to the 2012 CIF Division I Northern California Championship.
Manzanares played defensive back for City College of San Francisco as a member of the 2007 National Championship team.
Following his career at City College of San Francisco, Manzanares transferred to San José State, where he received his bachelor’s degree in business management. Manzanares then earned his master’s in communications management from USC.
