Jan Jorgensen is in his second season as Utah State’s outside linebackers coach. He has 11 years of collegiate coaching experience and the 2026 season will be his sixth working with head coach Bronco Mendenhall.
In his first year at Utah State in 2025, Jorgensen helped Utah State to a 6-7 record (4-4 Mountain West) and its 12th bowl game in the last 15 years. With Jorgensen on staff, USU had six defenders earn All-MW honors as cornerback Noah Avinger and linebacker John Miller were both named to the first-team, while defensive tackle Gabriel Iniguez Jr., linebacker Bronson Olevao Jr., and safeties Brevin Hamblin and Ike Larsen were both named honorable mention. Avinger highlighted these honorees as he was named a HERO Sports Group of Five Second Team All-American.
Utah State had one defender honored by the MW during the season as Hamblin was named the MW Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Nevada as he had a team-high eight tackles, including a career-high-tying 1.0 sacks and a season-high 1.5 tackles for loss, to go along with an interception he returned 38 yards for a touchdown. Hamblin also recovered a fumble in the red zone at the 1-yard line.
Defensively, Utah State forced 17 turnovers during the season with 13 interceptions and four fumbles and limited its opponents to just 17 points during the year following 11 Aggie turnovers.
Jorgensen came to Utah State after spending the 2024 season as the edges coach at New Mexico. He helped the Lobos to a 5-7 record, marking the program’s most wins in eight years. Their season was highlighted by a 38-35 victory against No. 19 Washington State, snapping a 26-game losing streak against nationally ranked teams. The UNM victory was its first win over a top-20 team since 1994 and its first non-conference win against a top-20 opponent since 1940.
At New Mexico, Jorgensen helped mentor three defenders who earned All-Mountain West honors as the team ranked third in the conference and 29th in the nation with two defensive touchdowns.
Before New Mexico, Jorgensen spent two seasons (2022-23) with his alma mater, BYU, in the role of defensive analyst, aiding the coaching staff in breaking down game film, scouting and analytics.
Before returning to BYU, Jorgensen was the defensive coordinator at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. While at Snow, the Badgers compiled a 20-6 record and allowed just 17.8 points per game over three seasons (2019-21).
Snow’s best year was 2020 when the team went 8-1, while the 2021 team went 7-2 and allowed just 13.7 points per game. That 2021 team totaled 28 sacks and 19 takeaways (12 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries). Amazingly, the defense allowed just 123 points for the season and scored 42, recording two interception returns and four fumble returns for touchdowns.
Jorgensen spent his first year as a full-time coach on the collegiate level as the defensive coordinator at Oregon Coast College in California in 2018.
Jorgensen got his career off the ground at his alma mater, BYU, serving as a graduate assistant for the defense and working with the edge players for three seasons (2015-17), helping the Cougars to a pair of bowl appearances.
Jorgensen was a four-year starter, earning third-team Freshman All-American accolades from The Sporting News in 2006 and being named an honorable mention All-America in 2007. He was a three-time All-MW selection (2007, 2008, and 2009), leading the league in sacks with 13.5 in 2007. He is still second all-time in MW history for career sacks with 28.5 and he was BYU’s sack leader for three consecutive seasons from 2007-09.
Jorgensen graduated with a pair of degrees from BYU, earning his bachelor’s in social science in 2009 and his master’s from the Marriott School of Business in 2017.
He is married to Ann Jorgensen, and together they have a daughter, Charlotte.
