Michael Gibbs is in his second season at Utah State as a senior offensive analyst. In his role, he works with the offensive line and assists in run game and protection schematics for the Aggies.
In 2021, Utah State had its best season in school history as it tied the school record with 11 wins (11-3), won its first-ever Mountain West Championship with a 46-13 road win at No. 19 San Diego State, posted a 24-13 win against Oregon State in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl and finished the season ranked 24th in the nation in both polls.
Utah State’s offense set six school records during the 2021 campaign, including 41 touchdown passes, 4,248 passing yards and three receivers with 10-plus touchdown receptions. USU’s offense also tied a pair of school records with 13 100-yard receiving games and five passing touchdowns in a single game.
Additionally, Utah State’s offense produced over 600 yards of total offense twice, and over 400 passing yards three times, all of which rank among the top-16 performances in school history.
Utah State finished the 2021 season ranked 15th in the nation in passing offense (303.4 ypg), 23rd in total offense (445.6 ypg), and 33rd in scoring offense (32.6 ppg). USU was also the only team in the nation with at least 10 touchdown receptions by three players.
Prior to Utah State, Gibbs spent the 2020 season in a quality control role at UCF working with the offensive line.
In 2020, UCF ranked second in the nation in total offense (568.1 ypg), third in passing offense (357.4 ypg), ninth in scoring offense (42.2 ppg) and 25th in rushing offense (210.7 ypg). Gibbs assisted an offensive line that had two first-team all-conference players in Matt Lee and Cole Schneider. The Golden Knights finished the 2020 season with an appearance in the Boca Raton Bowl.
In 2019, Gibbs was an offensive graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi, helping the team to a 7-6 record and appearance in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
Gibbs also spent three years (2016-2018) as an offensive graduate assistant at Arkansas State under head coach Blake Anderson as he helped the Red Wolves to a 23-15 record, including an 18-6 conference mark, and three-straight bowl appearances. A-State also won the 2016 Sun Belt Conference with a 7-1 league record.
The 2018 season saw the Red Wolves rank 17th in the nation in total offense (466.2 ypg) and 21st in passing offense (281.5 ypg). ASU finished with an 8-5 record and appearance in the Arizona Bowl. Gibbs helped offensive tackle Lanard Bonner earn first-team all-Sun Belt Conference honors for the second year in a row.
In 2017, Arkansas State played in the Camellia Bowl after averaging a school-record 494.8 yards per game to rank No. 10 in the nation. Gibbs helped coach an offensive line that helped ASU rank fifth in the nation in passing offense (342.2 ypg), 10th in total offense (494.8 ypg) and 13th in scoring offense (37.8 ppg). A-State’s average total offense was also a school record, while its 454 points scored tied the fourth-most in school history. ASU also produced over 400 yards of total offense in 10 of 12 games, including a school- and Sun Belt Conference-record 781 yards in a victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
In his first season at A-State, Gibbs helped lead the Red Wolves to an 8-5 overall record, a Sun Belt Conference championship with a 7-1 league record, and a 31-13 victory against UCF in the 2016 Cure Bowl.
Gibbs began his coaching career at East Side High School in Cleveland, Mississippi, as the offensive line coach in 2015.
Gibbs was a two-year letterman as an offensive lineman at Delta State (2013-14), earning first-team All-American honors, first-team all-Gulf South Conference accolades and first-team all-Super Region honors as a senior. He started all 21 of his career games at Delta State, ending his senior campaign with 36 knockdown blocks. Gibbs was recently selected to the Gulf South Conference All-Decade team in 2020.
Prior to joining Delta State, Gibbs played for head coach Gene Murphy at Hinds Community College (Raymond, Mississippi).
The native of Brandon, Mississippi, earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Delta State in 2016. He was an academic all-conference selection and member of the Dean’s List. Gibbs earned his master’s degree from Arkansas State in 2018 in sports management.
Gibbs prepped at Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood, Mississippi, where he earned first-team all-Metro and all-district honors, and second-team all-state accolades as a defensive tackle.
