Molli Sorenson is entering her sixth overall season on the Utah State coaching staff.
A former Aggie goalkeeper, Sorenson works primarily with that position group. She also coordinates the team travel and meals, while helping to manage the Aggies’ social media accounts.
Sorenson spent three seasons as a full-time assistant for the Aggies from 2013-15. The year before, she served as a volunteer undergraduate assistant after completing her four-year playing career. She also spent one year as a family and consumer science teacher at Cottonwood High School in Murray, Utah, before returning to the coaching staff for the 2017 season.
Under Sorenson’s watch in 2018, Utah State keepers posted a 1.57 goals against average, while the staff totaled 95 saves. Senior Grace McGuire led the group with more than 1,485 minutes played, totaling 80 saves and each of the Aggies’ three victories.
In 2017, the Utah State goalkeeping staff posted a 1.10 goals against average, allowing 22 goals on the year. Sara Cobb led the group, playing the majority of minutes and tallying 82 saves. Grace McGuire and Maggie Richey each also saw time in the net. Together, the three tallied 92 saves and posted seven shutouts.
In 2015, the Aggie goalkeepers combined for a 1.17 goals against average, allowing 24 goals on the season. Jeannie Woller finished her career that year, tallying 245 saves and posting a 1.09 GAA. Sara Cobb and Grace McGuire also saw time in the net, as the three combined to earn seven shutouts. Through the 2014 season, Sorenson helped coach the Aggie defense to a solid season, as the combination of Woller and Sara Cobb allowed only 21 goals in 20 matches.
In 2013, the goalkeeping duo of Woller and Natalie Stoven had a 0.91 goals against average, allowing only 21 goals in 22 matches.
As an undergraduate assistant coach in 2012, Sorenson helped guide goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford to a first-team all-WAC honor, allowing only 11 goals in 20 matches. Mulford recorded seven shutouts in 2012 and ended the season with a 0.57 goals against average.
Sorenson had a stellar career as an Aggie, as she holds two career records and is ranked in the top-five in two other categories. She is the career leader in goalkeeper minutes played, ending her career with 5,716 minutes in the net. She is also the all-time leader in shutouts with 23. Sorenson ranks second all-time in goals against average (0.90) and is fourth in career saves (221). She was named the MVP of the 2011 WAC Tournament, as USU won its first-ever WAC title with the championship game win against Fresno State. She earned first-team all-WAC honors as a senior in 2011, after leading USU to a 5-1-1 conference record, ending league action with a 0.28 GAA. She also earned WAC all-tournament honors in 2009. She also earned six WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors during her storied career.
Sorenson earned her bachelor’s degree from Utah State in family and consumer science education in 2013, followed by her master’s degree in physical and sport education in 2016. She married Todd Sorenson in June, 2016 and the two have a son, Beau.
