RUSTON, La. - Utah State's offense was limited to 195 yards Saturday as the Aggies lost to Louisiana Tech, 24-6, Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference match-up at LTU's Joe Aillet Stadium.
With the loss, USU is now 2-4 on the season overall and sliding to 0-2 in WAC action. LTU improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in WAC play.
The Aggies lost to the Bulldogs for the fifth time in the last six meetings, falling to 3-5 in the series. USU is now 1-3 at Ruston.
USU's 195 yards of total offense was split with 122 rushing and 73 passing, as senior running back Derrvin Speight had 48 yards while senior quarterback Diondre Borel totalled 38 yards while passing for 14-of-23 for 73 yards.
Defensively, USU was led by junior linebacker Bobby Wagner's game-high 15 tackles while fellow junior linebacker Kyle Gallagher added 11 stops. Sophomore cornerback Quinton Byrd snared an interception, his team-leading third of the season.
LTU had 278 rushing and 149 passing for 427 total offense. Lennon Creer rushed for 120 yards with two TD's while Tim Molton added 93 yards. Ross Jenkins was 20-of-32 passing for 149 yards with one TD pass.
LA Tech was led by Adrien Cole's 12 tackles.
After USU took the opening kick and marched down the field, the Aggies' drive stalled and senior placekicker Peter Caldwell's 40-yard field goal was wide left. It was Caldwell's first appearance in a game since Fresno State on Sept. 18, missing the last two games with an injury.
The Bulldogs drove the field and scoring on an 11-yard Jenkins to Molton TD pass for a 7-0 lead and they never looked back. LTU added a 2-yard TD run by Creer to take a 14-0 lead before USU got on the board with a 40-yard field goal by Caldwell. The Bulldogs added a Matt Nelson 38-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in the half for a 17-3 advantage at intermission.
Caldwell split the uprights from 22 yards out for a 17-6 margin with 5:35 left in the third quarter, but LTU added a 10-yard run by Creer for the final score with 4:21 to play.
Utah State has a bye week next week before hosting Hawai'i on Saturday, Oct. 23 for Homecoming. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m., as part of a full weekend, which includes a special ceremony and unveiling of the Merlin Olsen statue at Romney Stadium.
