LOGAN, Utah -
POST-GAME QUOTESUtah State vs. Southern UtahNov. 19, 2011
Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"We are not going to feel bad about a win, that's the first thing. You look at that game and obviously we are a long ways away from being a very good basketball team and that is what I have been saying for a while. We have a lot of new people and some guys that are trying to find their way. When you are out there playing and Brady Jardine goes down, and Brockeith Pane is having a really tough night, and Morgan Grim is in foul trouble, we are out there with a lot of guys that haven't played a lot of basketball at Utah State. They found a way and they made some plays. I thought that Jordan Stone gave us an emotional lift that we desperately needed. We don't know if we can play right now, some of us, they are going to have to figure it out and believe they can play for us to progress. We made some spectacular plays and we made some really poor plays. We hustled on some rebounds and got some dunks, we flew around a little bit. We got some offensive rebounds and we go down three times in a row and didn't guard them. We stopped the clock and things like that, we aren't very good with a lead right now. Two games, the BYU game and this game, we found a way to let them get back into the game. We will take it and we will try to get better tomorrow at practice."
Freshman Guard Steven Thornton...
"We had to hustle, but we did it. Everybody was lazy at first, but we really stepped up and played better. Everyone did great, Kyisean (Reed), Jordan (Stone). Jordan came in with a ton of energy, Kyisean dunked all over everyone, which gave everyone else a ton of energy. Somebody had to step up and score, so all of us stepped up."
"We're happy about not having any turnovers in the second half. I'm sure Coach Morrill will be tomorrow too. You just can't turn it over that much."
"Brady's (Jardine) our leader. He's one of the few seniors we have, so when he went down that meant everyone else had to step up. Brady is a big part of the offense so our big guys will have to step up (if he's out for more time) and our wings will have to step up to help too."
Southern Utah Assistant Coach Ron Carling...
"It was a lot of fun. It would have been a lot more fun if we'd gotten four more points. I've got to give Coach Reid some credit. There aren't many teams who are willing to come up and play in here. That's why they have a 34-game winning streak going. At least we had enough nerve to come up here and battle. We're really proud of our kids. We've got great kids to work with and the effort was tremendous. We made a few mistakes at about the five-minute mark where we let a four-point lead get away from us. We're proud of our effort, we're proud of our kids. We think this is going to be a pretty special team. We handled the ball well. They usually press the ball a lot more than they did, but because we handled the ball against the press, they had to go to a zone. It's really a disappointing loss for our kids because we had a chance."
