Aggie Golfers Continue Fall Season at Utah Invitational This Week

Oct. 5, 2014 LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men's golf team continues its fall schedule this week at the second annual Utah Ogio Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club in Park City, Utah.

The tournament, which gets underway at 9 a.m. Monday morning, will play at par-71 over the 7,130-yard layout. Teams will play two rounds Monday and the final round Tuesday. All teams will be allowed to play six players and count its top five scorers during the tournament.

Joining Utah State in the 13-team field is Arkansas-Little Rock, Boise State, Cal State Bakersfield, Pacific, Santa Clara, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UT Arlington, Utah Valley, Weber State and host Utah.

Scheduled to compete for the Aggies are seniors Grahm Schmaltz (Kalispell, Mont.) and Zach Waxler (Casper, Wyo.), juniors Brennan Coburn (Layton, Utah) and Seokwon Jeon (Salt Lake City, Utah), and sophomores Tanner Jenson (Parker, Colo.) and McCoy Willey (St. George, Utah).

In its last competition, Utah State tied for fifth-place out of 17 teams at the Colorado hosted Mark Simpson Invitational with a 3-over 579 (290-289) as Schmaltz tied for 11th individually with a 2-under 142 (71-71) for his best-ever tournament finish.

At last year's Utah Invitational, Utah State tied for second out of nine teams with a 21-over 1086 (355-259-372) as Jeon claimed medalist honors with a collegiate-best 7-under 206 (67-71-68) after winning a two-hole playoff. Coburn also competed for USU a year ago and tied for 26th with a 6-over 219 (71-70-78), while Schmatlz placed 35th with an 11-over 224 (70-78-76).

On the season, Jenson leads Utah State with a stroke average of 70.88 over eight rounds, which currently ranks 45th in the nation, while Schmaltz has a stroke average of 73.13 over eight rounds, followed by Jeon (73.75) and Willey (73.75), who have also played eight rounds this year. Waxler has a stroke average of 74.80 over five rounds this season and Coburn will be competing in his first tournament this fall.

In all, Utah State has recorded two top-five finishes during the fall as it began the year by winning the Weber State hosted Battle in the Tetons in Victor, Idaho and then placed ninth at the U.S. Air Force hosted Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational before tying for fifth-place at the Colorado Invitational.
