LOGAN, Utah - Utah State Head Coach Matt Wells
Opening Comment:
"First of all, it's a good win because it's the first one, and hopefully the first one of many. A lot of good things out there tonight, some maybe not as clean as we all would've liked, but we found a way to win. We're still a young team; we're still growing in several areas and I think the sign of a good team, hopefully, will be to continue to improve each and every week. We have got to get things cleaned up as we head into Wake Forest, there's no question about it, but we're going to celebrate a win and celebrate a victory."
"Two players that stood out to me are JoJo Natson and Jalen Davis. JoJo is a special player, and he made some nice plays in the punt return game, obviously, and in the passing game, running the ball, he played really well. Jalen Davis had an outstanding night, the game ball goes to him. I think he has a chance to be a good player for us, if he continues to improve and maintain his focus on the things that need to be."
Freshman Cornerback Jalen Davis
Opening Comment:
"The defense played alright, but we have to do better if we want to win the Mountain West Conference."
On his two interceptions and touchdown return:
"My coach always prides on looking at two and if he goes out then to jump the interception and that's what I did. On the second one, the driving receiver just dropped the ball, and it went in to my hands, so I ran. It was a good momentum change, getting all the fans and players into it. We knew we'd be on a roll."
Junior Wide Receiver JoJo Natson
Opening Comment:
"Offensively, we started off slow, but we began to pick it up in the second half. We just have to execute a little better. We're there; we're just not at our peak right now. Each week we'll get better on executing. On special teams, every time I get out there, I think about scoring a touchdown. Our punt return group did a good job of holding up guys and blocking for me. I thank them for that."
"I'm a receiver first. I just look for opportunities to get the ball and make plays. The coaches believe in me. Each week they're dialing something up to get me the ball and make plays. That's what I do. I like punt return. Coming into college I didn't know I was going to play that. Coach Wells gave me the opportunity and now I make the best of it. I fell in love with it and I thank the coaches for giving me that opportunity."
On tonight's success on special teams:
"Special teams are something we take pride in, not just offense and defense. Our coaches make us focus up and do well on special teams. We have guys that are really dialed in and take pride in being part of special teams. Our coaches put us in the right position."
Junior Running Back Rashad Hall
Opening Comment:
"Offense started off slow, but at the end we started picking it back up. We have the offensive line to thank for that. Kevin Whimpey just kept pushing the five of them. They were running tough. Chuckie Keeton was being a leader as he always is, pushing us running backs and wide receivers. It was good to pick it up and just run with it in the second and third quarters."
Idaho State Head Coach Mike Kramer
Opening Comment:
"It was an absolutely fascinating effort by both teams. I think we played as well defensively as we've played since I have been here. Chuckie Keeton is a very darn good quarterback; we found a way to make him suffer, while they still got 40 points. They did a great job in their kick teams. Dave Ungerer, their kick teams coach, is a wonderful guy. He seems to play that role well. We played as hard as we could, and he caught us in one and all a sudden it was a touchdown and really that was the tale of the tape. I'm really proud of our defense, because they lagged, but then they fought back and they finished strong. I have not seen us do that in a long time, against their good guys. Offensively, we had no field position throughout the night. That's a result of their offense and their kicking game and our inability to get ourselves off the field. We fought back and made it respectable for us, belief system still intact."
