A series of home runs from the opponent was the major factor in the series finale between Utah State and New Mexico softball Sunday, as the Lobos hit six homers to defeat the Aggies, 12-2 in six innings.

With the loss, the Aggies fall to 9-19 on the season and 1-2 in Mountain West action. New Mexico improves to 18-13 and 2-1 in league with the win.

"I'm not sure what was different between day one and day three. We used the exact same lineup today as we did Friday," said USU head coach Steve Johnson. "It just comes down to where we're at with our focus and our mental game. New Mexico made the adjustments and we didn't. We've got to find it in our heads somewhere to come out and fight a lot harder."

New Mexico opened the game on a powerful note Sunday as the second batter homered to center field, also bringing in the runner on first. After two quick outs, the Lobos added another homer for the early 3-0 lead.

The next stretch of the game was quiet on both sides, as no one scored until the Lobos added an RBI on a triple in the top of the fifth. After leaving runners on base at the end of each of the first five innings, the Aggies finally answered in the bottom of the fifth. Junior outfielder Sarah Chow was first on base, but was putout at second in a fielder's choice in senior shortstop Jolene Koons' at bat. Koons was the first Aggie on the board, scoring on a triple from senior outfielder Hailey Froton. Froton was then able run home on a passed ball at the plate.

The sixth inning proved to be the deadly one for Utah State as New Mexico would add eight runs in the attempt. The Lobos opened the order with three consecutive home runs, where junior Noelle Johnson was then relieved at the mound by freshman Jordyn McCracken. The Lobos went through their entire batting order in the inning, led by Mariah Rimmer who hit two homers, including one that scored three runs. The Aggies were then unable to answer in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game on a run-rule.

Utah State returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 25 when it hosts border-foe Idaho State. Action from LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field is set for 2 p.m.
