Utah State 5, Montana 3
Finding its first winning streak of the 2015 season, Utah State softball opened the Boise State hosted Springhill Suites Invitational with a 5-3 win over Montana, Friday.
With the win, Utah State improves to 3-12 on the year, while Montana falls to 2-13.
Several Aggies had strong performances in the win, where three players each had a pair of hits. Senior shortstop Jolene Koons and sophomore first baseman Paxton Provost each added two RBI, while Provost led defensively with nine putouts.
The Grizzlies were first on the board Friday morning, scoring in the bottom of the second inning, adding another pair of runs in the fourth for an early 3-0 lead.
Utah State responded in the fifth inning, where junior pitcher Noelle Johnson led off with her first home run of the season. Making her first appearance of the season, Provost doubled to left field, bringing senior outfielder Hailey Froton and Koons across the plate to tie the game.
Despite an error and allowing a stolen base, the Aggies held Montana scoreless in the bottom of the fifth before adding another pair of runs of their own in the sixth. With senior third baseman Nicole Arata and junior catcher Kirstyn Namba on base, a double from Koons gave USU the lead. The Grizzlies went 1-2-3 in their next innings, ending the game and giving the Aggies their third win of the season.
On the mound, Johnson recorded a season-best six strikeouts, pitching her third complete game of the season. With the win, she improves to 3-4 on the year.
The Aggies continue action from Boise tomorrow with a pair of games. USU will open the day against St. Mary's at 8:45 a.m. before continuing the day against in-state rival Weber State at 10:45 a.m.
