LOGAN, Utah -
Fresno State 8, Utah State 0
At the conclusion of a long week of Mountain West action, Utah State softball wrapped up a three-game series with Fresno State in a 8-0 loss Sunday.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 16-26 overall and 8-7 in Mountain West play. With the win, Fresno State improves to 30-14 on the year with an 11-4 league record.
After two evenly played games to open the series earlier in the weekend, Sunday's game was in the hands of the Bulldogs from the beginning. Overall, Fresno State earned 12 hits to go with its eight runs, while the Aggies had just one hit on the day, a single from junior outfielder Sarah Chow.
On the mound, Jill Compton was able to strikeout five USU batters, while neither Aggie pitcher was able to rally for three strikes. Junior Noelle Johnson started her seventh-straight game in the circle for USU, pitching 3.1 innings before being relieved by sophomore Alleyah Armendariz.
It took both teams some time to find a groove on the field Sunday, with the first two innings ending with an empty scoreboard. Fresno State added a pair of runs in the top of the third, when Paige Gumz hit a two-run homer. In the bottom of the inning, senior shortstop Jolene Koons was the only Aggie to get on base after being hit by a pitch.
The Fresno State offense continued to build in the top of the fourth, where it added its final six runs. A single to third base from Malia Rivers was enough to bring in two runs, while Kierra Willis singled up the middle to add another. Alyssa Villalpando hit a single to the outfield, but was able to advance to second on the throw and push two other runners home. The advantage continued to increase when Whitney Smith earned a walk with the bases loaded.
When the Aggies were unable to answer the Fresno State runs in the fourth or fifth innings, the game was called.
The Aggies continue their homestand on Tuesday, April 14, with a doubleheader against in-state rival Utah Valley. Action from LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field will begin at 1 p.m., with the second game following 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
