LOGAN, Utah -
San Diego State 10, Utah State 2
Utah State softball continued the final home series of the year Saturday, dropping a five-inning game to San Diego State, 10-2.
Playing in the designated player spot, Noelle Johnson was 1-for-2 at the plate Saturday with a home run in the first inning. Senior shortstop Jolene Koons also had a strong offensive performance, going 2-for-3, while senior outfielder Amburlyn Orozco added the second RBI of the game. Sophomore Alleyah Armendariz and freshman Paige Mills split the time on the mound, allowing nine hits while walking five batters and striking out three.
"We had seven hits, but at the end of the day we weren't able to string them together to push the runs across. If we had been able to do that, we would have had a different ballgame," said USU assistant coach KC Smurthwaite. "We figured out Erica Romero's pitches, but we just couldn't string them together. From an offensive standpoint, we just need to do a better job going into the box knowing the situations."
With the loss, Utah State falls to 16-35 on the year, with an 8-12 Mountain West record. San Diego State improves to 34-18 overall with a 17-6 league record.
Following suit with Friday's game, San Diego State was first on the board with four early runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Taylor Stewart. In the bottom of the inning, the Aggies were able to get one run plated, a home run from Johnson.
Armendariz retired the first three Aztec batters in order to open the second inning, while USU added one more run. Sophomore first baseman Paxton Provost singled down the left side, advancing on a fielding error by SDSU. Emma Willenborg entered as a pinch runner for Provost, scoring on a single from Orozco.
San Diego State extended its lead in the top of the third, with a two-run home run from Lorena Bauer. Another three runs were added in the fourth, as the Aztecs worked though the majority of the batting order. The Aggies then went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth. With one more run in the fifth, San Diego State secured the eight-run advantage for a run-rule. Despite two quick hits, the Aggies were unable to answer, ending the game.
Utah State and San Diego State will conclude the three-game series on Sunday, May 3 at 12 p.m. Prior to the game, the Aggies will honor their five seniors in third baseman Nicole Arata, shortstop Jolene Koons and outfielders Hailey Froton, Amburlyn Orozco and Sarah Vasquez.
