LOGAN, Utah -
San Diego State 10, Utah State 4
Despite an early lead, Utah State softball dropped its final home game of the season Sunday, falling, 10-4, to San Diego State.
The Aggies were led by junior pitcher Noelle Johnson and senior outfielder Hailey Froton who hit a combined 5-for-6 Sunday. All four of USU's runs came off the bat of Johnson as she hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the second. With her home run, the Aggies set a new single-season home run record with 35 on the year.
As part of the Senior Day events, senior shortstop Jolene Koons made her first-career start on the mound. She will now end her collegiate career having seen time in every position on the field. After one pitch, Johnson took back her pitching duties, allowing 13 hits with three walks and one strikeout.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 16-36 on the year, with an 8-13 Mountain West record. San Diego State improves to 35-18 overall with an 18-6 league record.
San Diego State was first on the board again Sunday, but the Aggies were able to answer in the bottom of the inning and take their first lead of the series with Johnson's home run. The Aggie streak continued into the second inning with Johnson's double, giving USU a 4-1 advantage.
However, that was the end of Utah State's scoring for the day, while the Aztecs went on to add nine additional runs over the next five innings. Of those runs, six were over the fence. SDSU set a new school record for home runs in a single game with the six, which were hit between five batters.
The Aztecs took the lead back in the third inning with back-to-back runs off singles, followed by consecutive homers in the fourth. The fifth inning led-off with another home run, while another runner crossed the plate on a sac fly. With three additional runs in the sixth and seventh, the Aztecs secured the win and the series sweep.
Utah State will conclude its 2015 campaign next weekend in a three-game series at Boise State. Games are set for 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8, with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday, May 9.
