Feb. 1, 2016 LOGAN, Utah - Utah State gymnast Hayley Sanzotti was tabbed the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Jan. 31, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the first time this year and first time in Sanzotti's career that she has been named USU's student-athlete of the week.
The junior from Wheaton, Ill., won two of the Aggies' three event titles in Utah State's 195.425-195.250 come-from-behind home win against No. 24 Southern Utah last Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Sanzotti tied for first on beam with a career-high score of 9.900 and later won the floor exercise with a career-high-tying 9.875. She helped the Aggies record a season-high team score of 49.050 on floor, which helped Utah State rally past the Thunderbirds and improve to 3-0 at home this season, recording a season-high 195.425.
Sanzotti and the Aggies will return to action when they compete in their fifth consecutive dual meet at Denver on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 5 p.m. The Pioneers were one of the founding members of the MRGC, but now compete in the Big 12 Conference.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ââ'¬" Junior guard Shane Rector (Bronx, N.Y.) scored in double digits for the fifth consecutive game as Utah State lost at home to Nevada, 89-84, last weekend. Rector recorded a career-high 16 points in the defeat, shooting 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from the floor, including a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line. Rector rounded out the game with three rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ââ'¬" Sophomore center Hannah Hutchins (Ledyard, Conn.) led Utah State to a 79-66 road win at Nevada last weekend. Hutchins recorded her second double-double in as many games, tallying a season-best 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while adding one steal. On the night, she shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the free throw line.
MEN'S TENNIS ââ'¬" Sophomore Jaime Barajas (Woodland Hills, Calif.) posted a 4-0 combined singles and doubles record last weekend in leading Utah State to a 2-0 home record with wins against Grand Canyon (7-0) and Idaho State (7-0). Against the Antelopes, Barajas teamed up with freshman Samuel Serrano for a 6-2 doubles win at the third position. Then, Barajas disposed of the reigning WAC Player of the Week, Mitch Maroscher, at the No. 1 singles spot in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). Against the Bengals, Barajas and Serrano again partnered up for a 6-2 win at the third position. Then, Barajas topped ISU's Sebastian Edin at the No. 1 singles spot in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). With his two singles wins, Barajas moved into a tie for ninth place on USU's career singles wins list with 36.
WOMEN'S TENNIS ââ'¬" Junior Nini Guensler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) posted a 2-0 combined record in doubles and singles play last week in leading Utah State to an in-state win against Southern Utah, 7-0. In singles, Guensler won in straight sets at the No. 1 spot (6-2, 7-6). In doubles, Guensler teamed up with junior Ekaterina Tugarinova for a 6-1 win at the first position.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD ââ'¬" Senior Parker Bluth (Riverton, Utah) placed second and set the school record in the 200m at the New Mexico Team Invitational last weekend with a time of 20.73, breaking the previous record of 20.80 set by fellow senior Nic Bowens last year. After adjusting his time to 20.80 due to altitude, it ranks first in the Mountain West and sixth in the nation. Bluth also was a member of the 4x400m relay team that placed second with a time of 3:08.89, breaking the school record that was set in 2015 as well. Bluth concluded his weekend with a third-place finish in the 60m (6.74). After altitude adjustments, his converted 60m and 4x400m times of 6.76 and 3:09.33 rank second and first in the conference, respectively. Additionally, Bluth ranks 44th nationally in the 60m, while USU's 4x400m relay team ranks 15th in the nation.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD ââ'¬" Senior Maci Bingham (Basin City, Wash.) placed third in the weight throw at the New Mexico Team Invitational last weekend with a heave of 18.04m (59-2.25), which ranks third in the Mountain West. Bingham also placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 14.45m (47-5).
