| Utah State 7, Fresno State 4
In a day of dramatic wins, Utah State softball swept a doubleheader against Mountain West rival Fresno State, Friday. The Aggies opened the day with a walk-off 1-0 victory, following that with a 7-4 comeback win to close the day.
In the first game of the day, the Aggies tallied just three hits, with each coming from a different batter. Senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo scored the sole run of the game, with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. Defensively, senior first baseman Paxton Provost led with a season-high 12 putouts. Freshman Kellie White pitched the complete game, throwing five strikeouts and walking two batters.
In game two of the afternoon, the team continued to spread the offense through several players. Provost was the only player with multiple hits, as she went 2-for-2, while four other Aggies added a hit. Jaramillo, freshman outfielder Riley Plogger and sophomore designated player Bailee Trapp each hit home runs in the win. She was also the leading defensive player with seven defensive stops. Senior April Brown made the start in the circle, but was relieved by White after 3.1 innings. Together, the two tallied seven strikeouts, while allowing four walks.
With the two wins, Utah State has secured the series win over Fresno State. This is the Aggies' first series victory over the Bulldogs since the 1992 season.
With the wins, Utah State improves to 25-9 on the year, including an 8-3 Mountain West record. Fresno State falls to 24-15 overall and 5-6 in league play.
The day started out slow, as the first game developed into a defensive battle. Utah State had one hit in both the first and second innings, while Fresno State added one in the first but went until the sixth inning without another. The Aggie defense retired the Bulldogs in order four times through the game.
After the bottom of the seventh inning opened with a strikeout against Utah State, Jaramillo earned the walk-off win with a home run to center field.
Utah State had three hits to Fresno State's two in the first game, while the Aggies had one error.
After a quick break, the teams returned to the field for the second game. It had a similar start to the earlier competition, as neither team put up a hit through the first two innings. Fresno State came out strong in the top of the third though, getting on the board through a two-run home run.
The Bulldogs then extended their lead in the top of the fourth. After leading off with a dinger to right center, Fresno State batters followed with a double and a single. The Aggies changed pitchers then, but a runner stole home to plate a fourth run for the Bulldogs.
Utah State's comeback started in the bottom of the fourth. Provost picked up the first Aggie hit of the game with a double to left center. Jaramillo then added her second home run of the day, scoring both and cutting into the deficit.
The Aggie offense really came alive in the bottom of the sixth, as the team scored five runs on four hits. Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke led-off with a single up the middle, stealing second. Provost then added a single to center field, giving Clarke time to run home. Jaramillo then drew a walk, while Plogger blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence, clearing the bases and giving the Aggies the lead. Fresno State then made a pitching change, adding a strikeout on the next at-bat. Trapp kept the scoring alive though, as she earned the first out-of-the-park hit of her career.
Fresno State added one more hit in the top of the seventh, but a groundout to the mound ended the game.
Fresno State out-hit the Aggies, 7-6, in the late game, while both teams were perfect defensively.
The timing for the third game of the weekend series will be determined by weather. Coaches from both teams will meet Saturday morning to discuss the possibilities and set a game time for either that day or Sunday, April 9. An official announcement will be made through the USU softball social media pages.
