ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -
Utah State 5, New Mexico 1
Behind several big hits and strong pitching, Utah State softball secured its second Mountain West series win of the season Sunday, defeating New Mexico, 5-1.
Sophomore pitcher Kellie White threw her second complete game of the weekend, tallying 10 strikeouts. Sophomore second baseman Devan Sperry was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a home run, and got on base a third time with a walk. Sophomore outfielder Riley Plogger also had a perfect on-base percentage reaching on a single, two walks and a New Mexico error.
With the win, Utah State improves to 16-27 on the season, including a 6-12 Mountain West record. New Mexico falls to 12-31 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
After an unproductive inning on both sides to start the game, Utah State was first to score, doing so in the top of the second. Sophomore designated player Allanah Alvarado led off with a single to right field. Junior first baseman Bailey Lewis followed, hitting a home run to left. Sperry then hit a double to left field. She was able to score as senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke singled, but was thrown out trying to make it to second.
New Mexico scored what would be its only run of the day in the bottom of the inning. After a lead-off walk and a sac bunt, a single up the middle brought the runner home.
The Aggies extended their lead in the top of the fourth with another two-run home run. With one out on the board, Lewis drew a walk and junior Mia Maher entered to run for her. Sperry then came up big with a blast over the center field fence.
Utah State had at least one baserunner in every inning of the game Sunday, while the defense had one 1-2-3 inning against the Lobos.
On the day, Utah State tallied six hits to New Mexico's four. The Lobos also had one error in the contest.
Utah State will play three non-conference games next week. The Aggies will face their final in-state opponent in a game at BYU on Wednesday, April 25, at 6 p.m. The team will then travel to McKinney, Texas, to play a pair of games against former WAC rival Louisiana Tech on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28.
